What is 'GameJournoPros' and why should you care? GameJournoPros is a private mailing list which the owners of many competing game publications use to communicate outside the public eye. The creator of the mailing list, Kyle Orland, directly stated that the mailing list was inspired by the controversial JournoList which ended many a career in news outlets a few years back. While members of this mailing list confirmed its existence after the intial leaks, until recently they have denied any accusations of collusion or conspiracy, describing it as nothing more than communi cation between friends. In an 80 billion dollar industry where reviews and ratings have a direct impact on the future of game studios, the accusation that prominent game journalists are conspiring to push a single narrative and choosing collectively what games and developers to cover is a serious one indeed As more and more exchanges are leaked from the mailing list it has become increasingly clear that collusion, conspiracy and other illegal activities have been taking place within this journalist clique with developers and game enthusiasts paying the price from their corruption What is the Destructoid scandal? Why is it a big deal? This story features Allistair Pinsof (former writer, Destructoid) and Yanier "Niero Gonzalez (owner, Destructoid) Destructoid contributor Allistair Pinsof is writing an article about someone scamming IndieGoGo for sex reassignment surgery #Around the same time, she attempts suicide live on Twitch, Alistair feels conflicted DESTRUCTOIL llow staff give him the green light on no possible ethics issues fore publishing the article, Allistair takes things to twitter where he whistleblows the scam, warning his followers that the IndieGoGo campaign is a sham. The scammer's friends go nuts and call for his head e backlash causes Destructoid owner Niero to have a change of heart, reprimands Allistair for the article and bans him from using Twitter #Alistair catches wind that he's already fired; goes on Twitter to resolve the issue with said transwoman, not under the mpression he's violating the Twitter rule (considering he's already fired) Niero asks GameJournoPros (aka the owners of rival publications) what to do t People on GameJournoPros say fire him Allistair offers to resign if he can get a letter of recommendation t Niero says he's suspended, refuses his resignatiorn I Niero stonewalls Allistair, says he 'violated the Twitter rule. They try to work it out but Nero gives up Alistair says that firing him would be worse for both parties-he doesn't get the letter of rec, employer open to wrongful termination lawsuit (theoretically) i Allistair attempts to warn other Destructoid employees (notably Jim Sterling) i Allistairs's aunt, a mediator, steps in to help, Niero dares her to bring this to court Niero fires Allistair in private but acts like he was just on suspension, in order to build up the narrative that Allistair was on twitter while suspended Niero and GameJournoPros blacklist Allistair, threaten to delete all his work and put "WORST EMPLOYEE EVER on his byline if he speaks out. Notable participants in the blackdlist include Kyle Orland and Kevin Kelly Incidentally, conspiracy to blacklist in the way just described is illegal in Destructoid's home state of Florida Allistair eventually finds out another former Destructoid writer Holly Green got her work deleted after being fired after allegations of sexual misconduct This is but one of MANY stories emerging of shady and/or illegal tactics happening behind the scenes. Corruption in games journalism is not a new phenomenon, but after the reveal of GameJournopros, ma苜y consumers of game related media have finally had enough and a large scale consumer boycott has taken place. Author has 304 answers and 740.1K answer views. 5y Not that I care that much either way, but it did expose a lot of corrupt game developers and game journalists. X Journalists would make claims of people like Anita Sarkeesian "playing video games all her life" when she openly admitted many times she is not a gamer and only starter recently (when it wasn't for an interview). Various developers trading sex or money for good reviews got exposed, journalists who accepted got exposed. People became a bit more critical about supporting a game just because the developer has a victim complex stating tat their game could have only failed because of sexism, instead of their own poor developing skills. What really sealed the deal was opposition often faking their own harassment. Anita sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn have been caught multiple times screenshotting "harassment" while showing that the harrasser's account name in the login. Or when someone called the police to help Sarkeesian against a "very real threat" she was posting about, only for police to find the harasser's messages were coming from her IP address. I just wanted to point out that Nyero told directly Allistair that he was fired… but because it was only a "private mail", Nyero could pretend anything since it was not official, you know, like "Oh, I was just furious, but we're cool now?".

Disgusting.
