X Journalists would make claims of people like Anita Sarkeesian "playing video games all her life" when she openly admitted many times she is not a gamer and only starter recently (when it wasn't for an interview). Various developers trading sex or money for good reviews got exposed, journalists who accepted got exposed. People became a bit more critical about supporting a game just because the developer has a victim complex stating tat their game could have only failed because of sexism, instead of their own poor developing skills. What really sealed the deal was opposition often faking their own harassment. Anita sarkeesian and Zoe Quinn have been caught multiple times screenshotting "harassment" while showing that the harrasser's account name in the login. Or when someone called the police to help Sarkeesian against a "very real threat" she was posting about, only for police to find the harasser's messages were coming from her IP address. There are taboo views/positions To use the easiest, most obvious, example: You can discuss the Holocaust, debate exactly when the Reich decided that the answer was mass murder, if the massacre of the Jews somehow makes people forget about the rest of the Cap's victims, etc. These discussion happen all the time, both in Chat, and depending on the way it is brought up, in post 1900. No harm, no foul, lots of really thoughtful comments. What you can NOT do is claim that the Holocaust did not occur (Denial), that the victims "deserved" it (justification), or engage in whataboutism (The Allies nuked Hiroshima so...). Nazism is also a automatic kill. War Crime denial is something of a wobbler, but can fall into this category as well. Any of those are one way tickets out of town. Racism/overt insulting bigotry are also potentially ban-worthy first time, depending on how overt and offensive it is Gamergate has lots of recent victims, not because of Gamergate as a subject, but because every single effort made here to support it was, at the core misogynistic. That doesn't mean a reasonable defense can't be mae assuming someone can find it (although I am frankly hard put to come up with even a reasonable devil's advocate position), it means it would have to be based on fact, not opinion or sympathy for gamers who started the crusade.
