About
Azuki the Hedgehog is a male hedgehog with a considerable following on Instagram. He is mostly known for staged photoshoots in which he appears in costume and performing a variety of human activities, like camping and kayaking.
Origin
According to Azuki's blog,[1] he was born in January 2016 in Japan. One month later, his owner Shuichi Tsunoda launched the hedgehog's Instagram[2] account on February 28th, 2016. The first post (shown below) received more than 200 likes in nearly two years.
Spread
On December 4th, 2016, Azuki announced that the Instagram page had received more than 100,000 followers. The post (shown below, left) received more than 4,200 likes in one year.
In October 2017, the Instagram account featured numerous photos of Azuki with tiny camping gear. According to a post, Coleman camping supplies built a small tent for the hedgehog. Each of the posts (examples below) received more than 10,000 likes in two months.[9][10][11]
Several media outlets have featured Azuki camping, including Mashable,[4] The Sun,[13] News Corp,[14] Stuff,[15] Daily Mail,[16] Independent,[17] Cosmopolitan,[18] Country Living,[19] Bored Panda,[5] CBS,[6] Time,[7] New York magazine[8] and more.
On November 7th, Redditor [12] beroemd posted a picture of Azuki in a tent in the /r/eyebleach subreddit. The post received more than 770 points (98% upvoted) in one month.
As of December 2017, Azuki's Instagram has more than 281,000 followers.
