Furries (1980)NSFW

added Jun 16, 2009 at 02:07AM UTC

Supplemental Entry

We’re not saying it’s a meme; just an important subject of many memes. Understanding furries is essential in understaning many furry-related memes, such as Yiff in Hell

What is a Furry?

People who identify themselves as Furries are those who are fans of the Furry Fandom subset of the larger Science Fiction genre.

Furry Fandom refers to a wide variety of books, artwork, and other materials in which anthropomorphic creatures are featured. Anthropomorphism (fictional animals which bear human-like characteristics such as facial expressions, and bipedal walk to name a few) has existed in story-telling and visual artwork for much of human history. Some early examples of Anthropomorphism come from the Greek-origin children’s stories, Aesop’s Fables.

Although these themes were present in many works of fiction, the establishment of Furry Fandom as a genre is often traced back to a Sci Fi Convention in 1980, during which a drawing of a character from Albedo Anthropomorphics by Steve Gallacci initiated an active discussion of anthropomorphic characters which, in turn, resulted in the formation of more discussion groups, and eventually full conventions such as Anthrocon.

Fursuits

A Fursuit is essentially like a mascot suit.

There is a common misconception that Furries wear Fursuits.

A survey by the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Davis found that only 18% of their participants who identified themselves as Furries owned fursuits. Occasions for wearing fursuits were found to be primarily for the sake of conventions and meetings akin to the costumed characters of other sci fi genres; while some expressed that their custom fursuits were used in sexual activities. While there has been a great deal of media attention surrounding these so-called “Furverts,” the sexual fetishism of the Furry Fandom culture remains a smaller niche, and it has some more conservative Furries upset.

Furry Fandom Communities

There is an MMORPG called Furcadia!

While sexual fetishism isn’t applicable to everyone who would identify themselves as Furries, the Furry-themed 4Chan clone Fchan is host to a user-base with a very active apetite for Furry porn.

But there are other communities, such as this Fursuit LiveJournal Community that express a desire to keep it non-sexual.

Please, keep it PG13. (aka “work safe”, no showing “bits”)

Also, furries aren’t a meme. You’re right about that. But they’re a social group steeply based in them interwebz, similar to Anon. I don’t think there’s a need for all sorts of examples of furry art on this page. Just enough for people to understand the concept. If you had any sort of pics or comics that showcase popular aspects of the culture or that relate to the community as a whole, as oppose to just random pictures of furries, that’d probably be more helpful.

I’ll admit that I might have gotten a little carried away there. I just added in what most furry sources would agree are some of the most iconic symbols in the furry fandom. Of course, there are thousand… no… MILLIONS more, but it’s going to get too crowded here if I continue to add in stuff.

Of course, I had to end with our ever favorite childhood yellow teddy bear, Whinnie the Pooh!

@ Mudkip<3

Well, the furry fandom, if you don’t already know, basically centralizes around anthropomorphic animals (Garfield being one of them). Even if the maker of the comic, video game, televisions series, movie, or whatever is not a furry, these kinds of things are still considered to be symbols of the furry community. You probably think that the furry community only makes up its own stuff like fursonas and webcomics, but that’s not entirely true. Look at Star Fox, that’s one of the largest furry-adored video games ever, yet the creators did not intentionally create it for the furries or are necessarily furries themselves. This game is also the reason why numerous furries have joined the fandom, so it’s iconic by itself. So you see, most of those childhood characters of yours like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, Whinnie the Pooh, Snoopy, and GARFIELD are furry-related and must be added to this section of the site. Trust me, I’m a furry.

I could go on like this for pages, but the point is that no, we don’t need another article, and that this is merely a parent entry.
