"I'll Take a Potato Chip and EAT IT" is a memorable quote uttered by Light Yagami from the 2006 anime series Death Note. In memes, the catchphrase and scene have been used in various YouTube Poops where it's used as an exploitable in remixes.

Origin

The original scene comes from the last part of episode eight, season one, in the Death Note anime series titled "Glare."^[1] In the scene, the villain protagonist Light Yagami, or Kira, grabs a potato chip out of the bag and takes a dramatic pause to utter, "I'll take a potato chip … AND EAT IT!" before taking a bite. Played out in slow motion, the potato chip shatters into sparkling dust (seen below).

The YouTube Poop remixes began just prior to the episode making its U.S. debut on October 20th, 2007. On July 4th, 2007, YouTuber^[2] YasashiiYuki uploaded a video titled "Epic Potato Chip Eating Death Note Live Action" using a scene taken from the Japanese live-action Death Note film, receiving over 190,000 views in roughly 13 and a half years (seen below, left). On December 8th, 2007, YouTuber^[3] Hikaripop uploaded a video titled "Anime Poop – LIGHT TAKES A POTATO CHIP," receiving over 132,000 views in roughly 13 years (seen below, right).

One of the most well-known instances of the Death Note YTP surfaced on December 27th, 2007, after YouTuber^[6] aslion uploaded a five-second soundbite of "I'll Take a Potato Chip and EAT IT" excerpted from the original scene. The clip accumulated over 3.1 million views, 33,000 likes and 10,900 comments in roughly 13 years (shown below).

The exploitable clip served as a jumping board for many YTP derivatives that followed on YouTube. In January 2010, it was viewed over 1 million times and ranked the No. 6 Top Favorited and No. 20 Top Rated video in the Education category.
