Top TV Memes: The Best Meme Formats From 'Loki'
Loki is Marvel’s latest Disney+ series that follows Tom Hiddleston as Loki – or rather a variant of the Loki we know after he picks up the Tesseract in Endgame – as he further screws up the timeline.
He finds himself imprisoned by the TVA, or Time Variance Authority, where he’s given the chance to help them track down a dangerous variant of himself rather than face execution. As one of the MCU’s all-time favorite villains, the excitement surrounding this new series was overwhelming and continues to be so even after its ending. Season one of Loki received largely positive reviews, and season two will (theoretically) be coming out in January 2023.
Loki doesn’t seem to be what fans expected, but many consider it the best Marvel show of the three we got this year. Others are divided, especially after seeing Alligator Loki become a major character and getting jump scared by a talking clock named Miss Minutes in the last episode.
The new characters and dramatic changes this brought to the Marvel universe have led to a lot of memes, some of which have grown in popularity so much that people who have never seen a Marvel show or movie could still recognize the formats. Here are the best episodes chock-full of memes.
Most Popular Memes: Episode 5: "Journey into Mystery"
This was, by far, the weirdest episode of Loki, and possibly one of the weirdest things to ever come out of the Marvel universe. Here, Loki meets a number of variants in a region at the end of time known as "The Void." Of course, "Alligator Loki" makes his appearance here, and he absolutely steals the show, especially when he bites off the hand of the version of Loki that became president. Though the episode is a high-stakes situation, nothing matters more to viewers than Croki, who we’re guessing is the final form of an evolutionary line of Lokis, making him the superior being.
But this episode wasn’t just overshadowed by Croki, but also by the fact that it’s eerily similar to the Wizard of Oz. Early on, it’s implied the creator of the TVA, known as "He Who Remains," exists just beyond the end of time the Lokis currently inhabit, leading to hundreds of jokes about the "Wizard behind the curtain." But another character, Classic Loki (the one who "dies" in the actual MCU timeline, portrayed in his old age by Richard E. Grant), has somehow dodged becoming a meme despite the fact that his outfit, which is based on the original comics, looks like it belongs on The Tick. It’s complete with an adult diaper and a huge cape that seems to constantly be in the way of everything, which he proudly flaunts.
Most Meme Potential: Episode 2: "The Variant"
Throughout this episode, Loki essentially throws a one-person rave in front of the erupting Mount Vesuvius in order to prove a point. While the meme didn’t extend far outside the show’s fandom, there are a number of memes showing Loki at the destruction of Pompeii, particularly from a shot in which he nonchalantly smiles and poses in front of an oncoming landslide. It’s a moment reminiscent of the orchestra still playing their instruments while the deck of the Titanic sinks and his laughter as death drew closer spoke to Gen-Z viewers similarly to the Master Trole Kid flashing his sunglasses in the meme.
Loki also has a number of notable lines in this episode that became smaller memes both in and outside the fandom: one of which is the new theoretical replacement for Oh no! Anyway, utilizing the quote "Yes, very sad. Anyway, it got me thinking" in the form of a two-panel meme.
The other is Loki proudly proclaiming "Nothing has any consequence!" after releasing goats, hurling vegetables in the air, and telling everyone in Pompeii they’re about to die. While the memes in this episode may not be as big as Croki, the formats themselves appear to be just starting to take off and are worth exploring further before the Loki hype dies down.
