Welcome to the Weekend Wink, where the memes that trended over the weekend are explored and explained, quick as a wink. Entering the second week of August, the theme of the month seems to be flashbacks, as most memes so far share many similarities to older versions, just with a fresh coat of paint on them. From Confused Reporter essentially being a rehash of previous two-panel formats to Facemorphs featuring a new spin on deepfakes, the month is full of themes we have seen before, but there are a few choice formats.

Spotify "This Is" Parodies

The Spotify 'This Is' Parodies meme is another series that humorously misrepresents the subject of an image. The iteration of this meme type references Spotify, which often shows playlists with the same "THIS IS" title attached to an artist's mix.

Meme creators in the music scene may remember a similar type of template that was done in the past, known as Gonna Tell My Kids. In the example below, replacing the existing caption with “This is Billie Eilish" would essentially make it one of these newer Spotify memes. The big difference between the two templates is that the Spotify variety is exclusively used when referring to music, whereas only some of the latter's examples referenced music in their memes. Even before Gonna Tell My Kids, Goodnight Sweet Prince memes also intentionally featured misrepresentation for laughs. In these, a lookalike was depicted as a tribute to a recent celebrity death, incorrectly identifying them as the person who died.

There is a lot of potential in this format, and it could even be expanded beyond Spotify into a more mainstream format that pokes fun at all genres of music — helping to keep it relevant for even longer.

Daeodon At The Door

The Daeodon At The Door meme is refreshing because a cursed image that's actually creepy is finally in the spotlight after quite some time. An image like Daeodon getting significant attention shares similarities to Momo, which was connected to creepypastas.

Much like Momo before it, Daeodon is also a plastic sculpture model … and not a living creature or demonic entity. There's hope that with October coming up soon that Daeodon will be a herald to an early wave of fresh Spooktober memes, or at the very least, revitalize the scary and creepy genre of memes.

Head Bite Wojak

The last meme that spiked over the weekend is Head Bite Wojak, which is yet another variant in the long list of Wojak Comics. The gist of it currently is that a male Wojak suddenly transforms and attacks after a conversation goes sour. This Wojak is more graphic in nature than some of its predecessors, and the flexibility isn't necessarily as high as other Wojaks we've seen appear time and time again. Despite this, it came out to a strong showing on Facebook, and there is still potential in it continuing to grow and adapt into other formats down the road.

Track Jacket Robert Pattinson is a strange picture from 2017 that is just now getting meme attention. It started to pick up in use over the weekend, but what it signifies for the future is more important. With the new Robert Pattinson Batman movie poised to come out in the near future, it is almost assured that he'll be the subject of many more memes to come, just like his Twilight days. This specific meme has a fair amount of adaptability, but it will be up to the creativity of creators to see if they can make this template last.
