Why Does AI SpongeBob Think December 12th, 2024, Marks The End Of The World? The Creepy Doomsday Prediction Explained
The AI-generated Squidward Tentacles in the late automated SpongeBob SquarePants livestream called ai_sponge predicted over a year ago that the world would end on December 12th, 2024. Today is that date.
While many believe that Squidward's doomsday prediction is bogus, others can't help but feel a foreboding energy surrounding this (what should be an ordinary) Thursday. People are going to work, school or their unemployment caverns, some not knowing that today's the day.
Memes about December 12th, 2024, are appearing on TikTok and YouTube, but where did this prediction come from? When was it first uttered and why does it matter? Let's explain.
What's 'AI-Generated SpongeBob,' aka' ai_sponge?'
At the start of last year, a wave of television parodies hit Twitch which trained AI voice and AI chatbots on the episodes of famous TV shows. The first of its kind was Nothing, Forever which was a 24-hour livestream emulating Seinfeld.
Following its example, many programmers tried to recreate it with other shows. Enter ai_sponge which randomly generated a constant livestream of the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants.
Of course, these were crude recreations but the aesthetic only added to its charm, also exemplified in the Family Guy stream ai_peter.
ai_sponge generated a slew of viral clips and memes in 2023. For instance, 2006 Honda Civic was a phrase that Loudward (the fandom's nickname for Squidward) kept shouting. Also, who could forget the show's original doomsday prediction, August 12th, 2036, the heat death of the universe?
Unfortunately, ai_sponge has been discontinued as the characters said too unpredictable of things which often violated the website's community guidelines. It's the same reason why Nothing, Forever was axed the same year.
When Did Squidward Predict December 12th, 2024, As The End Of The World?
Last June, Loudward talked about December 12th, 2024, marking the end of the world multiple times. The clips were shared on YouTube during the timeframe. Back then, it was just a silly joke but as the date nears, people are starting to get worried.
Are People Worried?
This past week has seen an influx of videos and viral posts about the upcoming doomsday. Most of the memes have been lighthearted, playing into the nonsensical nature of the AI-generated characters that started the conspiracy theory.
However, viral videos on the subject posted today have a different tone. "We're all cooked," chimed one TikToker.
