Revenge of the Mafia: Reckoning

The last game was 2 months ago so I think it's time for another round of Mafia!

I had a lot of fun in the last game so I decided to run the next one. Last time though it seemed that the Mafia (the bad guys) had it a bit to easy so this time I'll be tweaking the rules a bit to even the odds a bit. There was also some confusion with respect to the names of the roles last time so they'll be a bit different this time round. Now without further ado, here are the positions for this round (name followed by number):

Mafia (varies) – These are the bad guys. Each round during the night phase the mafia players will discuss which player they want to be killed. The decision on who to kill must be unanimous and sent to me in a PM before the day phase begins. During the day phase the mafia players will attempt to blend in with the rest of the players. The mafia wins when the number of mafia players is greater than or equal to the number of remaining non-mafia players.

The Spy (1) – The spy is not a member of the mafia but is assisting them. During the night phase the spy will PM me with a player to investigate and I will tell them the role of that player. I will not tell the spy the role of their target player until the start of the day phase (eg. if they investigate the doctor during night 2 they won't know that it's the doctor until day 2. This is to prevent the mafia from identifying and killing a key member in a single night). The spy does not count towards the number of mafia members or non-mafia members (eg. if there are 5 citizens, 5 mafia members, and the spy the mafia wins but if there are 6 citizens, 5 mafia members and the spy the game is still going).

The Detective (1) – A grizzled detective working to get to the bottom of these senseless murders. This is essentially the spy for the citizens. The detective will PM me during the night phase with a player they wish to investigate and I will tell them the role of that player at the start of the day phase. What they do with this information is up to them but it's best one should be careful not to arouse suspicion.

The Doctor (1) – The friendly neighborhood doctor works tirelessly for the well-being of the citizens. During the night phase the doctor will PM me with a player who they wish to save. If the mafia targets a player but the doctor saves that player then the player survives that round. There is no limit on how many times a player may be saved but the doctor may not save themself (hard to perform surgery on yourself when you've been shot in the stomach).

The Fuzz (2) These two are members of the local police force working to save the citizens. Every two turns I will message them both with a hint about the mafia members. Both members will receive different hints and may collaborate with each other. When one is killed the remaining will have to work on his own and will only receive one hint every two rounds. The hints may be vague or specific depending on if I think the game needs to be balanced.

Citizens (remaining players) – The citizens are good honest hard working folk who have come under the wrath of the mafia. During the day phase you and everyone else will openly discuss who to kill in this thread. The citizens win when all the mafia members have been killed.

General Rules

1. If any player does not submit their PM to me during the night phase then their action is forfeit for that phase, including mafia, so make sure to get those PMs in!

2. If a player does not vote during the day phase then their vote is not counted. Only players who voted will be tallied (i.e. if a player has 3 votes against them and 4 players did not vote then that player is still killed).

3. If you take no action for 3 days (including day time voting phase) you will be removed from the game. For special roles you will be replaced by an existing villager. All players must vote in the day phase to remain in the game (i.e. the PMs sent in by special roles will not keep you in the game).

4. When you are killed your role will be revealed. You will be allowed to send me a single PM containing anything you wish to say (no character limit). I will then redact certain parts of your PM before posting it in the thread if I feel it will reveal to much, so you can go all out in your PM. You may still observe the game (obviously, I can't stop you from reading) but please refrain from posting.

5. PMs and private interaction between other players is allowed and encouraged but please keep these exchanges private (if someone PMs you telling you they're the doctor don't post about it in the thread). However, you may not send screen caps of private messages you have received as it is too easy to edit them with HTML.

6. When voting in this thread or sending in your PM please bold the name of the player you are targeting/voting for (place a * on both sides of a word to bold it). If you are changing your vote from one player to another please only bold the player you are currently voting for (i.e. don't say "I'm changing my vote from player 1 to player 2", say "I'm changing my vote from player 1 to player 2").

7. Please do not sign up for this game unless you are willing to commit. It's not fun for anyone when 5 players drop out right off the bat because they didn't get the role they wanted and furthermore it's a big disadvantage for the remaining citizens. Being a citizen can be lots of fun if you participate in discussions and actively try to figure things out.

Optional Rules

Below is a strawpoll link for two optional rules which could be used to balance the game if you guys think it is needed.

Optional Role: The Snitch – This is the citizens' guy on the inside. The snitch is essentially a reverse mafia player. Instead of trying to blend in with the citizens they are trying to blend in with the mafia. This player would be working for the citizen team by trying to kill all the mafia members. Obviously this role would be quite a game changer as it means the mafia members may end up killing themselves off. I will not add the snitch unless there are at least 5 mafia members in which case it would become 4 mafia and 1 snitch. Like the spy, the snitch will not count towards the mafia count or the villager count. The snitch has the potential to greatly hinder the mafia but would need to be extremely careful about their actions as the slightest misstep will arouse suspicion.

Optional Rule: Count Mafia Votes As a default, votes from mafia members during the day phase will not be counted towards totals for who to eliminate. I won't post a total tally of all the votes but it would be incredibly easy for citizens to tally up the votes and see if they match the results to narrow down mafia members. Granted this is a legitimate strategy but I feel it makes things a little to easy with just a little effort. If voted for in the strawpoll, mafia member votes will be counted towards the total during the day phase.

Strawpoll

I think that covers all the rules. If you have any questions then feel free to post them here before the game starts. Registration for the game will close on Friday the 3rd at Midnight (Mountain Time) and roles will be sent out shortly after.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON THE SNITCH

The snitch may not reveal the mafia members as that would ruin the game for everyone. The purpose of the snitch is to nudge the daytime voting and to cause disarray in the ranks of the mafia. Again this is a totally optional role so if you guys think it's game breaking don't vote for it.

Sign ups close in 11 hours! Last chance to get in the game!

Also, I won't be adding in the snitch role unless we have more than 20 players (4 mafia members). If we don't get past that then the snitch will not be added.

Considering that I died first last time I'll give this another shot (even though I would've signed up anyways I just needed an excuse for this post)

Alright guys, applications are now closed. We have 19 total players which should be enough for 4 mafia members plus the Spy. Based on the strawpoll you guys want the Snitch to be added to the game and mafia votes not to be counted. So there will be 4 real mafia members, 1 snitch, and 1 spy. I'll be sending out roles shortly so be ready.

Alright, roles have all been sent out. If for some reason you didn't get a PM from me then let me know and I'll see what went wrong. The game will begin for everyone in 24 hours. Special roles be sure to get your PMs into me before the game begins or you will loose your action for this turn. Citizens just hold tight until tomorrow night.

If you have any questions feel free to ask them here or send me a PM if it has to do with your role.

Are there any last wills or naw?

What exactly do you mean by that?

Also, I've decided that the game will start 24 hours from this post. That way the game won't start in the middle of the night and people will actually be around to participate.

Last wills as in last note after you die, could be anything from who you have suspicions on, who you think is innocent or know so on, maybe if you're the fuzz you say who your partner was so they don't get lynched, or try to lead people away from people they should be looking at as mafia, or "niggers did 9/11". Usually restricted to a few lines so can't exactly write a monologue. Maybe that should be sent through PM so that you can't suddenly change your will after you die, all up to you boss man.

Actually I like the idea of sending me a PM after you die. You can write anything you want in said message but if you write something that I think will spoil the game then I'll redact if before posting it. For example if you were to die and in your final message you want to say "I know player 1 is mafia because reasons" I would change it to "I know is mafia because reasons". Essentially I'll use my discretion to see what can be posted so you don't have to hold yourself back at all.

To reiterate: when you die you will no longer be allowed to post about the game. However you will be allowed to send me a PM (no character limit) with any information you wish to give. It could be hints about the roles of people or it could just be shitposting, I don't care. I will then redact certain parts of your message before posting it to the thread if I think it would spoil the game.

Also, if anyone knows a way to redact text using textile then let me know because that would look cool.

This is a reminder for special roles to get their PMs into me. If you do not get your PMs in then you will lose your action for this turn. I have already sent PMs reminding those of you who still have to get your votes in.

NIGHT 1: June 31, 1934

Tonight seemed just like any other. Peaceful, quiet, and a sky full of stars. The Citizens of Kentville, New York were accustomed to the quiet life, not much ever happened around here. Little did they know that their peaceful town would soon be the site of a bloody Mafia crime spree. When the dust settled, no one would ever find out what it was that the Mafia wanted. All they would know is that they were out for revenge. The first night of the incident started out like a normal night. The town's local Detective, Major Roy Bummers was out for a stroll. As he walked down the street he saw two shady individuals standing together in an alley. Kentville rarely saw any kind of criminal activity so he decided to check it out, just to be sure. As he approached the alley however, the two figures reached into their long coats and pulled out two pistols. Both fired repeatedly into the detective until he lay dead and motionless on the cold sidewalk. The night continued quietly.

DAY PHASE: 24 Hours Remain

Just a few notes, all of the above text is flavor text except for anything you see in red. It is know the day phase so all players are free to post in the thread to figure out who may have committed the crime. For now, the phases will be 24 hours but if that seems to short then I may extend it to 48 hours. Don't forget to write the persons name in bold when casting your vote for who to kill.

Okay, so let's start with what we know.

Two shady individuals. That has to be important somehow.

There was an issue with people sending in PMs last turn, as Crimea commented on. It could be assumed that only two mafia members sent in their votes, leading to only two acting.

However, RandomMan has two characters in his avatar, the two individuals could be referencing that. If that were the case, that would mean that RM has taken the lead role in the mafia. This runs in line with RM's status on the site and in these games.

The way I see it, both are very real possibilities and I will wait to draw more conclusions. In the meanwhile, I'm going to investigate some stuff.

Oh great, we have two murderers from the get go and right now, I can only make one vote. As someone mentioned, RandomMan has two people in his avatar, so I vote for RandomMan.

@Crymeariver

Your OP post is editable, so feel free to edit in the necessary information.

Bob, for a player with your experience this is easily the worst deduction I ever saw you make simply because of how far fetched it is. I could change my avatar and that deduction would already make no sense.

And you know that I'm a good player in these games, so you would make certain to not kill me right away unless you're certain I'm mafia or a risk to you. The detective is dead, so to see you target me right away is suspicious.

And then we already have people jumping in on something like that like it makes perfect sense. Are we perhaps looking at poor communication between mafia members here?

Consider you all noted.

I'm going to look more at the kill itself: Major Bummer.

Now, one could say that this kill is the work of an amateur. But I'd say this kill is more something done by someone with experience in these games.

Newbies often aim for the big names first, the people they at least guess could be a risk later on simply because they're known on the site. Experienced players however often try to act more like newbies in the beginning in order to cover up their experience, aiming for random kills the first few nights so that they appear inexperienced and in order to lower the risk of having the Doctor save their kills. Then the dangerous villagers would get targeted around night 3 or 4.

This is a tactic both I and Bob have used in the past whenever we were mafia, after which we'd try to use the day phase to get the villagers to vote for the players we consider a risk. So for now I am considering Bob a possible mafia member.

Anyways, I'd say "Two Shady Figures" can mean either just two mafia voted, or there are new and unknown site users amongst the mafia.

Medamonster is the only person who doesn't have enough site activity yet to have obtained a user title, which could make him "shady." Alongside that it's best to vote for new folks in the beginning in order to not lose valuable players too quickly.

Voting Medamonster.

Roarshack do look like a shady character but RandomMan has 2 characters in his avatar…
I'll go with RandomMan.

Mafia votes don't count!

I'm asking the remaining users who haven't voted yet to stack up their votes on another member (against myself from what I see here). You can pick Roarshack or Medamonster based on the votes so far (I'm willing to switch). Someone else is fine too, but just make certain we get a vote tie!

Getting a vote tie is an extremely useful tactic for discovering mafia. So if we generate a tie, we can use the kill results to deduct who could be mafia as their votes don't count!

This tactic has resulted in villager victory SO MANY TIMES already in the past. Assuming at least 2 of these 4 idiots are mafia, I'm in no risk of dying. If they suddenly switch votes now, then they'll get suspicious for sure.

@RandomMan

We have nothing else to go on, so Bob's theory sounds the most likely at the moment, and your "two shady figures" theory doesn't work because Medamonster is the only person without a title.

And because you have "nothing else to go on", you decide it's smart to kill off an experienced player who could be of great help to the villagers right away? Kinda a really stupid idea if you ask me, and makes you suspicious.

And Bob's theory doesn't work either because I essentially have either 1 person in my avatar (Charles Barkely), or said character 3 times (3 Charles Barkley faces). You're running on fumes here, son.

I'm still calling Bob's deduction a terribad one from someone with his experience, making it a very suspicious one.

Mine isn't perfect either, but then again "two shady figures" is a bad hint to start with as it's literally the first hint and the Game Master wouldn't be as stupid as giving away mafia identities right away. So look at "shady" from the perspective of the mafia have new players in their ranks, first time players.

But then again, I'm not asking you to switch votes. So what do you have to lose with a vote tie? If I am mafia, and you are not, then there should be no risks involved for you with a vote tie. Keep your vote on me, and hope the remaining players will follow my vote tie idea. If you are no mafia, your vote will count, and my odds of dying will increase, which in return will be beneficial to you as you then succesfully killed a mafia should I be one.

Vote ties are a golden tactic for the first few vote rounds and I am willing to be a sacrifice if necessary. I'll use my final note to throw in the deduction I can make from it should I die.

Of course if you are against a vote tie, and make certain I will die, then you are guaranteed to become suspicious once my role is revealed.

i don't know if i should vote RandomMan, because the Two Shady Individuals sound highly like RandomMan, However, if we look at No Original Name, he has Squigly as his avatar, must i remind you folk that Squigly is stuck with Leveithan. so this Two Shady Individuals have both No Original and Randomman in the belt of Shadiness.

but to avoid the sin of not voting.

my votes on RandomMan

This is a reminder that every player must post their vote in this thread. If you PM me your vote I won't count it and it will count as inactivity.

Well, some things I've noticed since my last post.

RandomMan only has one character in his avatar repeated 3 times. I tried to identify the tiny pic and thought it was Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley. Turns out, it was just Barkley. So, that doesn't work at all.

However, Stalker does have a point. Squigly is technically two people.

So, I'm going to vote for NON.

Also, RM. Chill out, it's the first day and we don't have much to go on, yet here you are calling people idiots and stupid. That's suspicious as all fuck.

Edit: I also found that Bummer has barely any activity in the forums, choosing to spend his time on KYM by uploading images and commenting. Whom here are the more active commenters?
