There's still a little bit of continuity though, it's not like SpongeBob or something where the universe completely resets between each episode. The characters change and develop over time (without deviating too much from their main focuses of course) and they remember events that transpire in previous episodes.
This, coupled with it's fantastically well defined and fleshed out universe is what puts FiM head and shoulders above other modern cartoons like Adventure Time.

Well I noticed it, and I know EqD noticed it. I don't think it's really a matter of popularity, more that we've all seen this scene parodied a thousand times before. Though to be fair, this one's a lot more subtle then you're average show would do it. (it's not even the main focus of the scene, which is nice)
