Oh God what.
…
…oh God what.
Now that I've got that out of my system, I'll get you info in a bit.
Good to see you back, twins. Algernon can't post often due to life, Iambob had life and stuff recently, and Owens is probably creating something that we could never imagine. Just come back when you can.
opspe, I still plan on offering the survey. My intention was to get a cross-section of the community. I can make some inferences, but I just wanted to ask questions of the community that I thought were interesting and that other surveys did not ask (or ask in a way that I think would be proper.)
We've certainly been outdone, but this is a particular niche. I still think it's a sound questionnaire.
Also, this seems to have turned into a shipping thread. Meh. I'll live (and I kinda started it anyway.)

Totally offtopic and random:
Anyone here good at editing soundfiles, like remixing, extending stuff, u know good with sound and stuff. I got a couple of MP3s that are in need of a remix/extend, they are like 45s long but there are several of em, I need em all combined into something nice. And since nothing in this world is free, im willing to donate/buy stuff I like :)
Id ask on another thread but you know, trolls and shit. Ask for photoshop and u get unrelated stuff.
God, the ponies are evolving. Thumbs, then bipedalism, then to who knows what?

You dont need no stinking thumbs to hold a mug!
Heres me using my current 56k modem to hold my mug. (Yes it has a pig on it, never mind)
Much like the 56k modem in that pic, the pony's hoof can be used to hold a mug. There is zero need for thumbs and/or fingers to hold it.
-
Modem has no points that can replicate thumb/finger and it holds a mug just fine. Its just has one simple shape and works. Like the pony's hoof.

Related. Somewhat.
Apparently, there are now more images tagged with "rainbow_dash" on ponibooru than tagged with "twilight_sparkle." I don't care. Twilight is Best Pony.
As for the pony holding mugs, my question would be about how Octavia holds a bow. I explain it as ponies being pretty squishy and stretchy. They can fit their hooves into the handle of a mug.
dac I don't want to know what kind of motivation you need to raise your mug to your mouth.

How do ponies hold objects?
I also like the idea that they have electromagnets embedded in their hooves/horseshoes.

I say magic and/or cartoon physics.
Pony hooves appear to be solid (you can hear clopping noises when they walk around) yet at the same time very flexible, whenever they need them to be.
I propose that Pony hooves are made of a cartilage-like substance that can be converted from a rigid to elastic state (and vice-versa) at will, allowing the hoof to grasp some items.
I also propose that this substance generates a strong magnetic field around it when changing state.
That's one theory. The other is similar to what has already been posted: Ponies have cavities inside the hoof which contains mucous glands. Ponies can secrete highly adhesive mucous from the bottom of the hoof whenever they need to latch onto something.
Alternatively to that, there is also the idea that Pony hooves work like Gecko feet.
In other news the article is trending nicely since a troll decided he wanted fruit salad for dinner.
He probably doesn't hate MLP. He is obviously doing it just to make people post more fruit salad…well if fruit is what he wants….
Fruit is what he gets. Either way, I think it is hilarious.
@Dac
That was a long time ago. My impression of you has since changed.
@Blue Screen (of death)
I have suspected for a while that pony hooves are made of something similar to a non-Newtonian fluid – in that their hardness and density increase when they are put under pressure. That would explain why they sound hard when stomping (i.e. being struck and put under pressure) and still soft when not. Perhaps it represents an alternate evolutionary path which allowed the ponies to keep the harness that hooves require as part of their day-to-day function while also gaining some of the dexterity that is ever so useful in any tool-using species.

The human equivalent would be hearing masturbating(Fap Fap) noises when we walk, LOL
@BSOD
then what, pray tell, is your new impression?
About the hooves, I don't really feel the need to explain it. Its just a cartoon. I chalk it up to magic.

We are talking about megasweet here, Im sure there is another version of that cereal pic.
Anyways, I remember someone here saying Megasweet was a girl, so know I refer to Megasweet as a girl. But is she a girl and how do you know?

My new impression of you is: "The one with the dirty, filthy mind"
Ponies, of course, should not actually hear "clopping" when they wank, likewise they wont hear wanking when they walk. Instead there should be more loud squelching sounds involved for mares and just rubbing noises for stallions.
….
Look at me talk about Pony masturbation. I suppose my mind is not so clean either.
Anyway, I know it is all cartoon logic and that the reason why Ponies can hold objects all comes down to the writers deliberately ignoring details.
But its fun trying make the nonsensical make sense. It's one of the few situations where I can let my Sci-fi imagination have free reign

Actually, Stallions masturbate in real life by beating their shlong on their belly like a drumstick. I have two male horses, so…. Ive seen my fare share of horse play.
Anyways, Im not sure how I should feel about being the one with a filthy mind in here, but I can't argue with that.
I'm enjoying catching up on this conversation, and then I hit the clopping part.
To throw in my two cents, I've never heard of non-male autostimulation in any animals besides human. Otherwise I agree with what BSOD said.

dac-attack!!! wrote:

No, but seriously. You keep changing the amount of exclamation points in your username, don't you?
Anyway, I've heard enough confusion to lead me to believe that she wants to be seen as a girl. Therefore, I believe she is a girl.
John Joseco also portrays Megasweet as a girl in a sailor/serafuku uniform in his art.
And then one that is, again, SAFE, but I'm sure not everyone wants to see Soarin' trying to seduce Megasweet.
I'm sure that they've spoken, and he knows for sure. But then again, I'm sure he's in on the ambiguity of the situation as well.
Also, it is worth noting that Megasweet may be a female. There aren't many women or girls in the fandom, so even though it doesn't matter, it's still worth mentioning. Statistical anomaly.
Somewhat related again, it has been a hope of mine that Megasweet would draw more humanized Twilight, and I know it's out there, but I hate seeing cute stuff and then getting R34 and ruining my cute spree.
…
If she updated the Ask Smarty Belle more often, then maybe I could see that style of Twilight there. That would be close enough.

@ Verbose
I changed my name to looneyrooney as a joke but then I changed it back with one more ! by accident, I changed it back yesterday.
About megasweet, I kind of wish I knew what she looks like. The stereotype of people like her would have me believe she is an "ugly and obese nerd", but I don't think so. I know plenty of nerdy people and people with dirty ass minds(me) that aren't bad looking at all. Personally, I hate the whole nerd=ugly stereotype. I'll admit that outside the internet I don't act very nerdy at all. I always wonder what people would think( aside from my best friends) if they knew how I thought. you know what I mean?
If there's one thing that Show Yourself thread taught us, it's that we're not all ugly and obese nerds (except Verbose), something which was mildly and pleasantly surprising to me.
I kid, of course. I'll admit, it's been interesting to consider what my friends' reactions would be given some of the stuff we talk about here. They would probably think of me a little differently if they discovered what was going on. Not that that would stop us being friends or anything.
Interestingly, the one brony I know IRL (although I don't talk to him very often) I could see being a total R34fag.

About Megasweet drawing more humanized twilight…
LOL
Personally, I hate the whole nerd=ugly stereotype
As a genuine Nerd myself I have met plenty of other nerds. There is only one I know of that actually met the stereotype of being sweaty, obese and slobby looking. Even then, there were reason for that outside of nerdy behaviour
Most of the Nerds I know actually take pretty good care of their bodies and also have sport hobbies for good measure. You would not know that they are nerds until you heard them talking about their League of Legends character. After all, they care about their own health as much as everyone else.
Others go completely the opposite direction and end up being very skinny and/or metrosexually tidy. I'm one of those impossibly skinny nerds myself
But I like to think that the stereotype exists for a reason: As a warning to all nerds that it is still possible to wind up being obese and ugly if we get too carried away with our own nerdy habits.
Nobody wants to be fat and ugly so we need to remember to take a shower in between those WoW raids every now and then.
@Post below
No, unfortunately.
There is only one I know of that actually met the stereotype of being sweaty, obese and slobby looking.
Was he Kim Dotcom? Please say he was Kim Dotcom.
Also, I'm liking this idea of the stereotype acting as a warning. It's all too true; unless your metabolism is hyperactive like BSOD's (apparently), sitting in front of a computer all day will turn you into a fatass.
I just wish the weather wasn't so shitty here so I could go outside without getting soaked. Stupid excessive rain.
About megasweet, I kind of wish I knew what she looks like.
I highly doubt the community will ever know that. She seems to be a witty person, so she's probably savvy enough to know that if she put her face online that people would with bash her or stalk her.
I avoided the Web, because I knew people online were jerks and usually not as smart as they think they are, but I've learned that KYM and broneis (that's the way you spell it now) are much better behaved than the Web and broneis at large.
The stereotype of people like her would have me believe she is an “ugly and obese nerd”, but I don’t think so…I know plenty of nerdy people and people with dirty ass minds(me) that aren’t bad looking at all. Personally, I hate the whole nerd=ugly stereotype.
I have a couple of theories about that. Neither are nice, but I'll go into the first one.
- When growing up, there are a few, basic things that are valued: Charisma, looks, social aptitude, athleticism. The people that have them or a lot of one of those end up being part of the mainstream…what most would consider "popular."
- As such, those without those attributes or with a severe lack of one of them cannot ascribe to that of the mainstream. They are, more or less, destined to be part of the shadow cultures. Those in shadow cultures and counter cultures become disenchanted with the mainstream usually because they can't ascribe to it, and they tire of trying and failing. Not because they didn't, at one point, want to be a part of it.
- As such, they begin to participate in activities of those who are confident and charismatic enough in the subcultures. Inductive reasoning says that those activities happened to be what we now call "geeky."
If there is any truth to that, then that's why people have that stereotype. And a lot of stereotypes have truth to them.
If you were to ask me how attractive girls I knew in anime club in college were compared to those I knew in social sororities, then I couldn't think of one comparison where the otaku girl was more attractive than the sorority girl. And usually, the sorority girl was nicer, less elitist (believe it or not,) and easier for me to get along with.
I was an outsider in anime club, because of the elitism. And the yelling. And the lack of coolness. And the annoying whiny voices. #dashdouche
I’ll admit that outside the internet I don’t act very nerdy at all…I always wonder what people would think (aside from my best friends) if they knew how I thought. you know what I mean?
I'm generally liked (and I'm truly blessed to be as such, although self-esteem screams "They're pitying you.") But I used to be more awkward than I am now, not athletic at all, and my facial features were kinda off. I hung out with the geeky kids and got to like geeky activities.
Eventually, I got more attractive, I became more confident (a little,) developed my family's athleticism…but I still wanted to play video games and watch Dragonball Z. And thought it was stupid to leave them because the people on the middle school football team didn't like them anymore.
So I became the letterman football player who got super excited when his mother got Pokémon Ruby for Christmas and played the ending theme of Yoshi's Island at maximum volume on the team bus on the way back home from a summer football camp.
And then we all took a nap. If you know the song, then you know why.
I can fit in on a certain level and with certain activities, but I've never been able to do a lot of different things with any one person, because my interests are as my ex said, "specifically geeky."
foreveralone.jpg
Broneis (THAT'S THE WAY WE NEED TO SPELL BRONEI) actually mimic my friends IRL. You guys have a lot of varied interests and backgrounds. You're not as annoying as the anime club, and you have more depth than either the anime club or the student council members. Some follow sports, some like video games, and one even knows a lot about fashion.
…is that we’re not all ugly and obese nerds (except Verbose),
HEY MAN. I got self-esteem issues, man. I only think I'm attractive, because people keep telling me that I am. And even after that, I'm not sure.
Also dac, I don't mean the R34. I've always liked humanized pony, and I think Megasweet does a fantastic version of Twilight Sparkle. She's just cute.

I like Megasweets pinkie pie, mostly because of her Boobies! She's got the perfect build really. she's not too skinny like dash, she got meat on her. Mmmmh mmmh good.

I suppose this got carried away in the flurry of joy upon my "return" (not really, said I'll try to post when I can), but FOR THE LOVE OF CELESTIA, IF YOU ARE A BRONY, OR KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MLP, CHECK OUT THIS CHART:
clicky
Let's see what it has to offer:
1. Brony Subgroups- Hipster, Unhappy, Creative, etc.
2. Typology-Social Brony, Secret Brony, etc.
3. Demographics- Age, gender, education, and OMIGOSH, sexual orientation (which is nothing like pony haters would like to think)
4. Some other TL;DR that seems interesting but I haven't gotten around to reading yet, but everyone else should because it's cool
Gotta say I'm a moderate, independent, internet, female, 20-30, entertainment/ irony (at least at first), canon, in postgraduate, heterosexual (I think) brony. If you read it, you would understand.
No I was not paid off by the author of the chart.
Hopefully I bring in some meaningful discussion and life back into this thread. There hasn't been any huge TL;DR war in the previous few pages that I read over, and if one starts, I want it to be me who causes it.

Did I live up to your expectations of how I look? Or did I shatter your expectations with my devilishly good looks?
Combination of both. I expected you to be a good looking guy. I figured that if you cared about fashion to any extent, then you probably had the looks to compliment it. However, I didn't expect the tanned skin.
You actually remind me of a friend of mine from college looks-wise. Brilliant in a well-balanced way (in terms of social abilities, remembering information, figuring out things,) but he knows nothing of animals.
I felt like Algernon. I really didn't want my name or face to be on the web outside of Facebook, but like I said, I trust and like you guys. And I wanted you to get an idea of who I am IRL. Mostly, I walk around in a hoodie and a straight face, but I'm not afraid to put a rubber duck on my shoulder.
And I actually did look like that in elementary school. I had big ears, big glasses, and a goofy smile.
Also, note that the picture was taken about 7 or 8 years ago. My face is a bit more angular now and I have a jawline and stuff, but I essentially look the same. I just wear thin, squared glasses now, because I only wear contacts when I'm playing sports.

Do all Canadians have five letter usernames that aren't capitalized and stay up late at night? Because I don't have many stereotypes about Canadians, and I can add that, I think.
It'd be like the one involving Asian girls dancing at 10 o'clock each night…
Also, dac:
lolno. However, I think twins knows you're joking.
As for the chart, twins, I did see it. There was an incomplete version a long time ago. I'd take issue with the sexuality thing. I really don't think anyone thought that we were mostly gay, but perhaps less "manly" than those who wouldn't watch MLP. That'd probably be wrong.
Now, the number of asexual and bisexual people in the community seems massive. Almost 20%. I think you'd probably get 15% at most in the US population, at least from other studies. There is some social desirability involved, but some of the studies of the general population are also online surveys.
Let's see. How would I describe myself…
Certainly moderate, male, graduate student, 21-25 years of age, United States, I generally submit to canon, but I have no problem with tame fanon, I generally only enjoy the show and fanart, I came for entertainment, but I do get a level of support from you guys. I'm strictly a brony online. I've spoken with an IRL bronei on Facebook where everyone could see it and I've bombed a friend's wall with Pony, but I've never been to a meetup. I'd only be interested in meeting most of you guys. Hidden brony describes me best, I think.
Verbose wrote:

(a) I was born and raised in Portland, OR, USA. I'm only half Canadian. Just to be clear.
(b) It's just after midnight here. If you consider that late, then okay, that's your choice.
© I don't live in an igloo.
To describe myself:
Moderate, male, undergrad, 21 (almost 22), Canada/US, I only participate in the online interaction sphere, and I'm somewhere between secret and social. I have spoken about ponies with some IRL friends, but I would never go to any type of con or buy any merchandise, mostly because I don't like that stuff anyways. I would generally prefer to remain canon, but some of the fanon has inserted itself into my brain (an odd choice of words, I'll admit). I enjoy some art and a little music, but I don't read fics or participate in R34-related activities. I'm here for the entertainment; I don't seek a whole lot of support from the community, but I do know that it's there should I need it. And like Verbose (actually this whole thing is like Verbose), I would only be interested in meeting some people from the thread.
As an aside, I was trying to figure out who lives closest to me, and it's between Dac and Connor. I only have a vague idea of where Dac lives though.

Well, I certainly didn't know that, and I have a feeling I won't soon forget it either. However, that sounds like an excellent topic to bring up when I want an entire room to go quiet.
FOR THE LOVE OF CELESTIA, IF YOU ARE A BRONY, OR KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MLP, CHECK OUT THIS CHART:
Someone linked that chart here earlier but nobody discussed it then so its good that you brought it up once more. I remember seeing an earlier version of that chart from before there were any real statistics. This one is much more informative
That chart would describe me as a Moderate/Independent Brony (Bronei for Verbose). I joined the Fandom simply by trying to learn about it and that is no secret to any of my IRL peers. I noticed that quite a few of us here got that description. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that most of us here can be described as moderate. We all seem to be drawn to the Fandom through similar fashions.
I wonder if that's a KYM thing? Hmmm
I also seem to be in some of the less common brackets in that chart: 21-25, male, Completed college, Bisexual, Pacific region. Etc.
I would have called myself a Creative/Independent however despite what I create as far as thinking up stories and drawing Ponies; I don't seem to bring enough of it in fruition so I'm sticking with Moderate for now
@Verbose
Now, the number of asexual and bisexual people in the community seems massive. Almost 20%
Reminds me of the Furry surveys, they turned out to have a huge population of Homosexuals and Bisexuals, I can't remember the percentage but it was higher than the Brony community for sure. In some cases straight people were the minority on Furry boards.

And I defy any of you to offer a non-magnetic, non-robotic, non-magical explanation for how Octavia holds her bow.
Hey guys, lurking through here because I went to bed early and thus woke up in the middle of the night. Interesting conversations, I would put an "Abandon thread" gif is some of them were still going on. And as for Opspe, your question about Octavia can be answered with "Great amounts of swag".
@Verbose
I pick response number 1. I find that to be the most appropriate. Also the King
@opspe
In that scenario, Octavia appears to be securing the bow underneath her clenched wrist
But the bigger question is how she is controlling the chords in her other hoof
