Earlier you said you hadn't watched the show in awhile. I thought you were one of the hardcore anti-pony trolls. Do you like the show?

I love the show, but that doesn't mean i wont poke fun to get a reaction. Lately though i haven't been trolling much at all save for that one time in the IRC a few days ago.

404 is a troll and a brony. He's actually a pretty fun guy. I don't have much else to say though, sorry.

My guess is that there is no situation in the show, Hasbro won't have to do much, because they haven't made any Derpy merchandise. WeLoveFine needs to cover their behinds. It's not that big of a deal. Especially since Nayuki already said that they aren't going to change their approach to the show.

Epicus, don't quote massive posts or images to reply with just a few words. Also, don't ask what's going on in the thread without at least providing an image or something. One of the complaints we've gotten is that this thread is too much like a chat. Saying "Hello" or "Good-bye" without contributing to the topic…or at least contributing Pony is frowned upon.

Derpy talked? So being 3 episodes behind does make me miss out on a lot. Someone remind me to go watch everything after Baby Cakes.

I've written so much for schoolwork that I really don't have any mental capacity for TL;DR, but I say that Derpy isn't offensive at all. In fact, she's one of the most endearing characters to the fanbase on the entire show. So what if she's clumsy? That's part of her nature. It's not making fun of anyone. Just simple humor is all. No need to over-analyze things.

And really, what would be better for Hasbro to do, alienate most of their audience by getting rid of a fan favorite, or pleasing the small but vocal (or at least they suddenly got vocal) minority who have no basis for wanting her gone than "it's offensive?"

I'd argue that each one of the mane characters could be seen as a stereotype of some type of person, even more so than I could for Derpy.

A name change, on the other hand, back to Ditzy Doo, which I personally think sounds better (but come on, Derpy was named by the fanbase), while keeping her as a background pony would be OK, I guess.

Also, the name Ditzy could still cause problems as someone pointed out, someone could complain that that's offensive to blonds, and giving what happened with the name Derpy, you know that they would.

To chime in to this discussion, which I have been attempting to ignore, here's what I think. The negative response obviously comes from the most recent episode, but the way Derpy was portrayed in the most recent episode wasn't the only problem. Although, from the perspective of someone who works to promote the integration of the disabled, it was bad enough to have her rocketing around breaking stuff, I think the way RD treated her was just as bad. Such advocates would not like to see a "normal" pony deriding and belittling Derpy because she's different, and they would believe that that would send a bad message to kids watching the show, something along the lines of "Hey, let's go yell at retards because they deserve it!"

While I understand their interpretation, and I can see why they would write to the producers, I personally don't think that it was necessary. These advocates push for the total integration of the disabled into mainstream society, and realistically speaking, this is impossible, and I think it sets a false standard. They would be satisfied, I'm sure, if Derpy were integrated into the Mane 6, which will never happen (thank god). I think their anger was misplaced; it's only a cable kids' show – there are far better places towards which they could have directed their rage.

I call it the Tea Party Effect, when a small but vocal minority gets their way despite the public interest.

I won't deny that Derpy could have been handled a little better in the scene she was in. Like I said; a character like her must be handled carefully.

Spongebob did it right with Patrick. Patrick is dumber than Derpy but he is a close friend who is clearly seen being treated with equal respect as all other characters. He does stupider and more destructive things than Derpy did. But remains no worse than everyone else in the Spongebob cast who also do stupid and destructive things.

I think the difference lies somewhere in there.

I did not think she was implying that Bronies are the majority of the MLP audience, rather she was saying that the audience that is NOT offended by Derpy, far outnumbers the audience that is. She may be correct.

It is unknown how many people complained. There are talks that the complaints have been greatly exaggerated so we definitely aren't up against a massive protest but it obviously was enough for Hasbro to notice.

How many complaints do you think it takes for Hasbro to take action? Whatever your guess, that's probably what it is. A hundred? A dozen? One?

Whatever the number, I am pretty sure it doesn't come close to this number.

Browsing each topic about Derpy on EqD, I could only find maybe 1 or 2 posts that express outright disapproval of Derpy. Buried deep under literally hundreds of shouts of approval.

Well…

I've fancied Applejack for a long time now. Seeing her harvest the apple trees and whatnot. She does it with this elegance and grace if you know what I mean. And I really admire her, especially the way she does up her mane…but…

But its like were both negatively charged and I can never get close to her you know? She talks about her hard work and apples and the Apple family and apples and baking pies and apples. Dear lord she talks so much about apples…I just don't know what to say to her, I don't like apples.

Whenever we walk past she gives me that look with a smile and I smile back…I know she's just waiting for me to say 'hi'… and I wanna say 'hi' but nothing really comes out. I guess…I guess I'm worried I'll strike up a conversation only to have nothing to talk about.

It seems like the only thing about her is just apples. There's no other depth to her that I can relate to…maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree, maybe busy and proactive country girls like her aren't for lazy and procrastinating city boys like myself…

Sorry for bringing up a dropped topic (although this might be because everyone went to bed).

Here's my share on Derpy. I read most of the posts, so it will be quite short on certain parts.

That post from Verbose with the Hub member that has an entire tag dedicated to him/her on Ponibooru (forgot name) literally said the following: "Derpy is our shout-out to bronies." With that being said we can pretty much confirm that Hasbro won't change the name. Her name is Derpy, the fans made it happen, and the Hub made it canon.

WeLoveFine is not related to Hasbro. They are a different company. Like Verbose said, they rather avoid getting legal action taken against them. The products still show Derpy, they are just given a different name. It's like calling a hoodie with Twilight on it just a "Purple Hoodie with print", nobody cares, we all know what it means.

But Hasbro owns Derpy. They own the pony and it's character, including the derp-eyes. Perhaps they even own the name, but I can't fully confirm this as fans originally made that. This places Hasbro on a whole other level than WeLoveFine. Whereas WeLoveFine hasn't got much to defend itself with when in court, Hasbro can simply say they own the show. Forcing Hasbro to remove the name Derpy or the character completely would take a whole lot more than some trolls or some hysterical mothers.

And then again, following X-Singular's post on other things they can ban. If Derpy gets banned, why stop?

• Spongebob and Patrick are very insulting to retards, I want the show banned.
• Raymond from the movie Rain Man is autistic, this is insulting to people who are autistic. Ban the movie.
• Phineas and Ferb should be banned, the show could give kids ideas to build live-threatening buildings and machines.
• etc. etc. etc.

So besides WeLoveFine and others who rather not get any legal action taken against them, I doubt we'll lose Derpy.

Anyways, I second most of the sentiments shared in here about the Derpy backlash.

So… I contacted hasbro re: derpy's name change. They contacted the guys behind the show.
Long story short, people werent happy with the way Derpy was showin in "The Last Roundup" and they had emails, phone calls, faxes sent over. So now they are working with their "quality assurance" people to fix this "issue". And hasbro pulled the episode from iTunes since this backlash.
