KYM Pony General V: We Just Don't Know What Went Wrong

Well, I agree with the previous opinions. One of my pet peeves is a lack of respect, and I think doing something with an individual's work that they don't want to happen especially when you know of their wishes is blatantly disrespectful. I'll try to present the other side of the issue though. It's no fun to have one side of the issue being dominated in a discussion.

I think Ponibooru users find it disrespectful that artists choose Ponibooru specifically to single out. Somehow, /mlp/, Ponychan, KYM, EqD, and other sites are OK to post to, sometimes without a link. But even with Ponibooru's unspoken protocol to link to and tag artists' work appropriately, artists don't want their work there.

I don't think it's that they truly want to disrespect the artist. I think it's that they would have to accept their identity as a place that some artists think so poorly of, that they would turn away traffic and popularity to keep their art from being posted there. They'd have to think less of themselves as a community. I think it's more of the fact that they are defending themselves from what seems like (and in effect, is) a personal affront.

Related: Do you guys identify with KYM as part of the KYM brony community? I'm sure not all of you do, but I know some of you do. I certainly hail from here, and if I had to identify myself (and will in something I've been working on for months…) I'd say that I was from Know Your Meme before any other site.

Anyway, when Ponibooru users say that we're dumb (and they do,) I feel offended, because I identify a bit with KYM bronies. Ponibooru has a lot of smart users who like decent discussion. That's one reason I like posting there. And, no offense to the most recent remarks, they aren't so focused on the "love and tolerance" mantra as many in the comments here (and some in this thread) are. Sometimes (alright, most of the time,) I prefer to just talk about the show or the fandom objectively. I have made friends here, and that's great for me, because I don't have many friends where I currently live. But I just get irritated with the love fests sometimes. I just want to talk and post ponu, man.

Ponibooru offers that. Consistently.

However, I think Ponibooru is the most morally ambiguous userbase I frequent, by far. Granted, I only frequent three hubs for brony activity, KYM, EqD, and Ponibooru. More users there are certainly more aligned with the way of thinking that made me avoid posting online than are here and EqD. Cynical stuff that the world offers in reality, and they use that as a justification for their own beliefs as opposed to defying it for their own lives. They see no need to disadvantage themselves further given an already unfair world.

Personally, I feel more in the middle. I believe the Internet could use a bit more love and tolerance, but only because I want the 'Net to be pleasant to people. But I don't believe the world IRL is that way. However, I still see a lot of places that combine anonymity with that cynicism and you get places like…well, Ponibooru.

I'd prefer the 'Net to be a place of refuge from all of that as opposed to a place that exacerbates it.

Anyway, I'm digressing a lot. I think users on Ponibooru feel like they're being singled out. And they are, no doubt. However, I don't think that overrides the artists' wishes in a case like this.

Artz. Don't like humanized ponu?

Too bad.

Alright, fine.

@Muffins

I'd say start it in a couple of hours which would be sooner than I expected. Algernon is interested, so that will let him get more episodes in before it gets too late in (Europeland.) If others want to join later, then that's great too.

I probably won't be there if you start it now, but I'll be around in an hour or so.

So when should I start up the synchtube (yes, I still want to)? Also, what episode should I start with first? Verbs wanted a Rarity episode and I'm in a Rarity mood myself, so I'm thinking of the following:

Suited for Success
A Dog and a Pony Show
Green Isn't Your Color
Sisterhooves Social
Sweet and Elite
and maybe Look Before You Sleep

@Verbs art topic

I think that since the artist took the time to make said artwork, we should ultimately respect his wishes and only spread his work with his permission.

But some people might say that the reason they uploaded it in the first place was so others could see it, and asking for it not to spread would defeat that purpose.

Also, I've only been on Ponibooru twice. My main sources of brony activity are on here and on Eq D. So I wouldn't know much about this subject as to why Ponibooru is neglected by artists.

Edit: Wait a minute, discussions happen on Ponibooru? I thought it was just an image site.

@KYM identification

I've stated this before, but this is actually the first forums and community I've ever "belonged" to. Before that, I had a very brief existence in the Nexus and Minecraft forums.

@NmM or Luna

I'm agreeing with everyone else that I like old Luna the most. She has more a cute factor.

But if I had to choose between the two, I'd pick Luna. Sure, I like villains, but Luna also has that social awkwardness factor that I tend to like.

Why are you making me choose? Why? I LOVE BOTH OF YOU EQUALLY! PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE. PLEASE.
@Everyone
I think you're misinterpreting her question. Its either S2 Luna or her. Old Luna is nowhere near involved with this. Yes, she is cute. But S2 and Moon have a bit more…heft to them.

@Verbose:

Well, to start off, loving the Applejack you're posting. You should do it more often, in my unbiased opinion.

Furthermore, I kind of agree that it is unfair for Ponibooru to be singled out, but it is the artist's wishes. If Ponibooru did something to bring that upon themselves, then it will be brought upon them. It might be unfair for the users that didn't do it, but that's the price of having a community, sometimes.

I'm still in favor of the artist, by far, because it's their content and creation. Ponibooru should have the ability to respect the artist, so that they can earn the right to be able to put stuff up as often as KYM. Maybe they haven't done anything to deserve it, but it's still the artists call.

If I were an artists, for example, I would be upset with somebody posting my content somewhere if I told them not to, regardless of whether or not they posted the sauce. If they didn't post the sauce, I'd probably get more pissed than if they did, but I would be upset either way.

Either way, it seems that most artists don't really mind, either way, and let their content be posted. It's helped a lot since most of them put signatures on their art, and a lot of people put sources up.

As for your opinions on Ponibooru's morality, I have to voice my own concerns. I favor places that actually tend to be friendly, nice, and more tolerating. Which is why I've enjoyed the Rift, Bethesda, Minecraft, and KYM forums more than others. They have, from what I've seen, the nicer communities, which makes it much more pleasant to post in, at least for me. I understand you favor discussion more, though, so you like the more talkative places like Ponibooru, which have more debates and all.

I can understand that, because sometimes a good debate, discussion, or what have you is enjoyable. If it devolves into a flame war a lot of the time, it's not as enjoyable. That tends to happen on the forums that aren't quite as welcoming as others. There are notable exceptions, of course, like the plethora of Nair vs. KYM threads we have here, the occasional verbal war on the Bethesda forums I engaged in constantly, and things of that nature.

Generally speaking, though, I tend to find the nicer forums, while generally engaging in debates less, tend to be less likely to devolve to flame wars. The debates and discussions are, from what I've seen, more enjoyable when they do get sparked, and are more reasonable.

There are other factors, of course. The Bethesda forums had more adult users, so the discussions were generally more reasonable and mature. As opposed to Minecraft, which had hordes of jackasses to kind of counterbalance the good part of it. It really came down to the specific board on the Minecraft forums. Then you have KYM, which is much less likely to have a discussion on most of the forum, since it's a site dedicated to memes, and is less serious than other sites. You also have population to consider. It's a deciding factor in debate quality, and how frequent you see debates. Rift had a meager population, so we didn't really have very many discussions, but what we did have were really deep and had well-placed arguments.

I guess it is an opinion, but I think more moral forums and sites are better, at least for me. If the community is close-knit and relatively small, while being active, all the better. KYM fits in those categories nicely, whereas other sites don't, at least not as well.

I agree with you that the internet should have more love and tolerance. I think that same love and tolerance should exist to real life, too. It's human nature to try to improve the world and the species, same way or another. What better way to do that then by spreading something everybody desires, whether they know it or not?

Relevant:

Edit: @Muffinator:

I'd say wait a short bit. Most people aren't ready, I don't think. I, for one, can't watch episodes at the moment, but I will most likely be able to soon.

If I'm the exception, go ahead and start it, though.

Hey, umm, does anyone here know how many episodes are going to be in season 3? Cause I heard a rumor, (I know it's probably fake) that there are only going to be 13 episodes in season 3. Can someone tell me if this is true or not?

I think it's 26. They're supposedly taking a break or something after 13, not sure.

It's not the first time I heard that, so it certainly is possible. But I cannot confirm whether it's true or not.

@Verbose

Perhaps in such an occasion it's better to look at the artist instead of the community it's being posted in. I'll use the artist of that Screwloose Tumblr for this.

For that we first have to take the artist's experience with the community into consideration. Does he have posted there before, was he part of the community before, or does his create an opinion solely on rumors?

Let's say first he has no experience at all with Ponibooru. Ponibooru is one of the very few websites that offers MLP porn to be uploaded. Under tags and with warnings of course, but porn is allowed nonetheless. This of course doesn't create a good image of the userbase, as we all know bronies who love (and I mean, really "love") the porn aren't the most accepted kind. Perhaps the sections you visited were more calmer. But I've seen images that feature plotshots where the comments are complaining about the lack of nudity. Then an artist takes the image and draws a vagina and anus on the original image (one of the comments linked to that) and the comments of the (now NSFW) new image are all positive about the result. If I was an artist, I wouldn't be positive about someone taking/stealing my work, making it have porn, only to see the reviews become more positive.

Of course by far not every brony is like that, but if you have a site which allows porn and users that want MLP porn and visit Ponibooru for the porn, only to complain when an image that could've contained porn doesn't, you're not building up a nice reputation. Being one of the few sites that accepts porn, they do attract those type of people.

On KYM, porn gets you banned. EqD handles their own images. Most DeviantArt groups don't allow it. Ponibooru, one quick jump to the filter and you can even put it on porn only.

Then we have the comments of the users you linked, an image ironically uploaded by Dpf and where you were the only person who took the objective approach. All the other comments were more like "The artist shouldn't complain, there's always someone out there who will post it here, so why should we be an exception." And that is where they think wrong, as you also pointed out. Again, comments like that don't build up a good reputation.

But now let's say the artist does have experience with Ponibooru. Perhaps it has happened numerous times his art was uploaded there, but constantly lacked the source. As an artist, even once, you will mind that. And if you then have mods who don't always listen to the wish of the original artist, you get a grudge against the website.

Your approach was more from an objective towards the site or community. But do remember not all artists mind their work being posted there. A lot of artists also add marks to their own art. But perhaps the artists that do mind it have a personal reason why they don't want that. Perhaps the community of Ponibooru then has to ask them why and, if possible, work to fix it.

The reason's can vary a lot. KYM doesn't alwasy gives sources, yet we don't hear artists complain about us that much. So perhaps KYM has a better reputation amongst artists. KYM has been featured a few times on EqD and each time I saw that I've scrolled through the comments and most of them were postive about KYM. So perhaps Ponibooru has done something in the past that gave them a bad reputation.

People often dislike bronies because there is porn of it. But we all know not all bronies like it. Hell, most even dislike it. But people tend to generalise in such occasions and blame the entire community. So when you dig inside the brony community, maybe artist tend to generalise the Ponibooru community. Is there a reason for that? I do not know, but the porn example above can certainly be one.

@Verbose, Explosive Lasers, and RandomMan
that's interesting, what you guys said about Ponibooru. i've only been on there for the briefest of moments, so i know very little about the state of the community there. personally, i must say it sounds interesting (if a little NSFW, which i prefer to stay away from because i don't want my parents finding me on…. that kind of site), i like a good debate, intellectual discussions are very fun. though i agree, flame wars aren't my cuppa tea.
as i've mentioned a couple times in other places, i'm rather new to the Forums of the interwebz, as far as things go. the only communities i've been any major or involved part of (before this one) were Minecraft and Terraria. i spent the first three months of 2011 on the MC forums, and i must say that looking back, they weren't my favorite. it felt like every thread was full of trolls and immature children whining about every little thing.
the Terraria community, however, was a fantastic experience that did a lot for me as a Netizen and a gamer. it was small and extremely well moderated, so there were very few trolls and griefers. still though, there was plenty of room for discussion and differing opinions. plus, they had lots of bronies there, (and ultimately that's what led me here).
as far as KYM goes, i think the reason why a lot of us here are of the "love and tolerating" type (and why we have a fairly good reputation), is because we make a conscious effort to keep things SFW and such. since KYM is specifically for bronies, we have certain constraints as far as how far we can go into the more… unsavory content of the fandom. and in addition, our close proximity to haters means that we try and keep a good image of ourselves so as not to draw their ire. or at least, i do that, and i get the feeling others do too.

if i may geek out for a moment, i think it's really cool that each site has it's own "personality", so to speak. the type of site and its purpose draws different kinds of people, and overall the people on that site generally tend to have an overarching disposition. obviously, there are always different opinions, but the fact that this happens at all just seems cool to me, for some reason.

@PopperFett

I would not. I feel as if FiM stands best as it's own thing and not crossed over with anything else. I understand that this answer undermines the question, but I feel fairly strongly on the point. I prefer cross-overs to be limited to fan art.

@RandomMan

I haven't even considered some of the points you presented there, so thanks for that.

Someone else said something similar to Ponibooru perhaps developing a bad reputation despite Ponibooru's posting protocol, but it never crossed my mind that it had anything to do with it being a site that allows objectionable material. As you have guessed, my filters don't even allow Questionable content let alone Explicit, along with many, many tags. I've browsed there so much, but I haven't seen many images under those tags and filters.

So perhaps they have singled themselves out based on what a few (or more than a few) users think/do and what the moderators there do/don't do.

well obviously, i'd merge MLP with:
the game "Story of the Blanks",
the show "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic"
and the movie "My Little Pony: The Movie" due to come out in theaters in 2014.

Gurren Lagann and Redline (the most amazing anime film I've ever seen).

The above two, merged with MLP:FiM would create unimaginably enormous levels of awesome.

I didn't follow the topic guideless very closely, I hope you don't mind too much!

  • Movie-series: MLP:FiM: The Movie.

@Verbose

The standard filter filters out explicit and tags questionable, but you can change what appears and what is tagged in the options.

This theory of yours is actually very old.

HOW DARE YOU PROTRAY APPLEJACK AS THAT PINKO COMMIE SLAVSHIT WEAPON?

Applejack would clearly be the dependable M14 rifle! STILL DEFENDING AMERICA!

Game: Anything related to Nintendo. (Especially Smash Brothers or Kid Icarus Uprising.)

TV: Toss up between Adventure Time (Hey, it's plausible.) and Phineas and Ferb (the Lulz potential is through the roof.)

Movie: Either the Chris Nolan Batman series ("You wanna know how I got these eyes?") Or the Avengers (SO AWESOME.).

My dreams come true!
Anyways, discussion time! I haven't made an awkward discussion in forever so the time has come for another discussion!
What would you do if someone dropped off futashy at your doorstep? would you keep her? I you do, what would you do to stop her urges? would you castrate her or leave her normal? keep in mind that castrated horses still have dongs that come out quite often. Would you cuddle with her because she is adorable or would the wee wee be to much too handle? I want your thoughts!
@Newbies: this question might seem weird, so if you dont like it feel free to ignore it. Just don't neg, I used to ask these kind of questions quite often.

Don't read Black & White, if you haven't already. Didn't make me cry.

It made me depressed for a week.

Between the feels, the aching feeling from the story, the final word from the author, and the entire thing wrapped together… Oh shit, my soul, my heart, my mind…

@Dac:

First of all,

Second of all, I would probably take care of her/it for a few days, while asking around on the internet to see if anybody wants her, posting pics and stuff that makes it sound legit. If anybody actually believes me and wants her, I'd deliver her to somebody that wants it, and would take better care of her.

I'm not the most financially comfortable brony, and I don't have a lot of space, so it'd be a hassle. Not to mention it wouldn't be my favored pet.

Now, to counterbalance the weirdness and awkwardness of my post:

I also really like Big Mac, and that whole part made me depressed.
I'm just getting into reading fanfics now that the season's over, and mostly light shipping ones are grabbing my attention, usually with bittersweet endings. I don't know about Black and White though, I don't usually read about background characters.

I think you mean KYM is NOT specifically for Bronies, right? But otherwise you are somewhat close, since we do have to keep ourselves in check around here with respect to the rest of the forum. After all, this ain't no Pony board

However the amount of love that gets shared around here has more to do with just how tight-knit this community is, particularly on this forum thread.

It consists of a few well known regulars who have been posting together for quite some time. Relationships have been built and securely welded together. As pointed out, different forums will develop different atmospheres and cultures, even when centered around the same subject. The Brony community here in particular has developed a stronger air of respect and adoration for its regulars and that seems (to me at least) to be cultural trend that is rather specific to the KYM users

Speaking of forum specific cultural trends and going back to what Verbose and Randomman were saying: it sounds like Ponibooru has its own cultural trend of feeling obligated to post art with or without artist consent and feeling justified for it (Because "they cite sources while everyone else wont"…among other reasons). I get that from the example that Verbose posted. Randomman explained the thought process behind that in detail. Meanwhile here, the cultural trend is to respect the artists wishes. I get that from everyone's reaction to Verbose's example.

I suppose this difference in attitude contributes to the artists willingness to have their work posted here but not Ponibooru

I would also agree that if an artist doesn't want something posted somewhere, the poster should respect that and not just say "well someone else was bound to do it anyway". If someone spread my art somewhere I didn't want to be spread and they said that to me, I would want to push their face into a meat grinder.

What would you do if someone dropped off futashy at your doorstep?

You and your damn topics…

Alright, I'd probably ship that thing over to the SPCA and wish it the best of luck of finding a new owner. Because I am in no position, financially or competently to be taking care of a horse that thinks (and rapes) like a dog.

If the SPCA wont accept it, I guess I'll have to give it the back lawn for it to graze and also give it an old pillow for it to rape but it can stay outside and live in the shed (I'll put some blankets down for it). There's no way I can handle that thing pissing and cumming on my furniture…and me

…ugh, Futashy (shudder)

You monsters! How could you not want to keep this cutie!
Just saying, people don't have a problem with male dogs, cats, horses, etc. why is futashy any different? She is a dog sized pony with a dick, so she is pretty much a male dog. Would you keep a male dog?

Last edited May 20, 2012 at 11:46PM EDT

Futashy…
It seems like a monster, and is probably not very appealing to look upon.
And yet…
I would take it in, if it is young. I would spend most of my time trying to drive any sexual urges away from it. And then… training. I would spend days on end, training the little scamp on how to be a Mandalorian. I do not waste potential. Hopefully, it'll focus on it's training and honor, rather than what to do with its body. Persistence is key, and hopefully, one day I will hand the thing it's blaster, and it will join the ranks of the Mandalorians…
Yes, with enough discipline, persistence, control, my patience, and time, it will make a fine Mandalorian…

You monsters! How could you not want to keep this cutie!
Just saying, people don't have a problem with male dogs, cats, horses, etc. why is futashy any different? She is a dog sized pony with a dick, so she is pretty much a male dog. Would you keep a male dog?

Yeah, dogs don't have dicks that huge. :/

@Dac

I wont lie: Futashy is cute. It's like a playful puppy most of the time

It's just it's…uh…promiscuous…personality that makes it rather unappealing.

I'd be terrified of bending over to reach something under the couch whenever Futashy is in the house. And my visitors absolutely cannot bring any of their bitches (I mean dogs, not whores you sickos) over to my house unless they want their dog giving birth to horses.

I guess what I am saying is that Futashy's cuteness doesn't forgive its high maintenance

@Windigo:

On page 102 I posted a pick daring us to name every single Changeling present in the Hall of the Elements of Harmony.
