Not only does firing someone for testifying count as Retaliation, which is illegal. But according to the Whistleblower Protection Act of 1989, threatening to do stuff to people for being whistleblowers or cooperating with investigations, is also illegal.

I'd bring up threatening witnesses but as has been stated and explained, this isn't a criminal proceeding. So that's why it's not full blown threatening witness illegal activity, but still nevertheless illegal.

Even someone as dumb as Trump is smart enough to know that starting a war less than a year before election day would end any chance of reelection, especially since he ran on a platform against pointless wars.
