Except there is no reason morally why polygamy would be wrong in human or pony society. In western society its just frowned upon for reasons that aren't necessarily well thought out.

The fact that there either are or were SOME societies in our world that were okay with it is probably reason to say that its also possible that ponies could be okay with it.

As for whether we can actually infer if the MLP verse would have polygamy… My best pre-requisite question would be whether their conception of "true love" is based on a rather Platonic teaching that one's love is somehow preordained and your compatibility is unique; or as Plato would have put it "your soul mate being born of a single split soul".

Once you throw out the idea that true love is only able to be shared with one person… You kind of open up the floodgates for more polyamourous cultures.

Do ponies have a "platonic" culture? Erm… Based on their attitudes towards friendship, they seem to have this idea closer to "all being's hearts can connect", even in just the friendship level. Whereas in western society in general, friendship is treated less like a connection of hearts… And I really don't know what to compare it to, other than maybe a mutual understanding.

So all things considered… the MLP verse should be even more likely than human society to accept polygamy than any human culture is. Since even the few attitudes that promote polygamy by rejecting the "soul mate" myth are not as potent as straight up saying that hearts can straight up bond together with anyone.

So while I have nothing definitive… I would not be surprised if pony culture was perfectly okay with polygamy.

Well, here I go! It's MLP fanfic reading adventure time! Here are the list of stories in my "Read Later" list to get you guys an idea of what stories I will read. One of the stories is not shown, and that is "Twilight Manages to Screw Up More Than Usual". The total word count is 97,807 words (including the story not shown in the pic). I won't read all of them before the year is over, though. I'm still planning to read "What I've Become", "Hail to the King", and possibly a super-long fanfic (100,000+ words long) before New Year's Day.

Edit: I have added another one to the list. It's <a href = "http://www.fimfiction.net/story/111322/princess-luna-likes-coffee">"Princess Luna Likes Coffee". I've read a lot of comedy stories, so I'm going to break the trend and explore into other genres, like Slice of Life with and without the Comedy tag, since I actually like reading Slice of Life stuff.

There is, of course, with he split-soul theory of why it has to be just two parts it's split into ;)

but seriously, a lot of the prohibitions against polygamy can be traced to the Bible.( specifically, the prohibition on sleeping with another man's wife. Since that was generally interpreted to include not sleeping with someone else's husband, a polygamous relationship was de facto illegal, since sex outside marriage was at least frowned upon, if not also illegal) But I suspect the original motive is basically jealousy.Either whoever first wrote the bible was jealous of someone who married a woman he(the writer fo the bible) had his eye on and said person happened to have multiple wives, or to prevent jealousy by(in their mind) making sure there was SOMEONE for everyone. (yes, homosexuality or simple asexuality mean it's not quite the case, but it's not until fairly recently that those weren't considered a choice)

but as for the MLP verse, it's hard to be sure, but of ponies that we have seen, they have been 2-pony relationships ( Fancy pants and Fleur de lys, Shining Armor and Cadence) however, that doesn't mean that a more rural town, like Ponyville, could have different practices.

I feel there are some things that need to clarified for the uninitiated, here.

First of all, Plato's idea about the two halves refers to those old Greek myths of hermaphrodites. If i recall correctly, the Greeks believed that humans were originally simultaneously male and female, but the gods sundered them into separate sexes for some petty transgression. Thus, marriage (and by extension, copulation) is a sort of attempt at mending that schism. This is also the root of the idea of a "soul mate", i.e. the half that you lost in that ancient cataclysm.

Second, one should always remember that the bible isn't the bible. The version of the bible you're most likely familiar with was compiled at the behest of a pagan Roman emperor who was looking for a tool to keep the cattle in check. The word canon originates from precisely this compilation, and there's quite a bit that falls outside of it.

Third, sex is and has always been the most heavily regulated part of human culture. The reason for this is simple; it's the most effective method of control. Like food, it's one of the basic necessities of most living beings, humans included. Unlike food, it can be withheld from the populace without immediate rebellion. For example, in Rome you had no right to marry (and by extension, have sex) unless you had citizenship, which you got by serving a minimum of 3 years in the legions. Needless to say, the legions had no shortage of fresh recruits.

The reason monogamy is the "preferred" method for humanity is because it allows the powers that be to keep their files neatly organized. Everybody fucking left, right, center and back would make for really messy, sticky… sorting algorithms for the data. Best the proles stick to just one pleasure-unit each.

It's rather telling that throughout history, members of the upper classes have been getting caught in beds they shouldn't be sleeping in. Of course, they consider themselves exempt from the rules. The rules are, after all, for the subjects, not the rulers.

There are two things going on at once. Human beings are not naturally monogamous and naturally would like multiple partners. Evolution made us want to spread our genes as much as possible. This is why cheating is so prevalent even in modern times. Some people by their very nature are not cut out for monogamy

However at the same time human beings also naturally want others to belong to them. "That girls is mine / Hands off my boyfriend". A natural possessiveness that compliments our need to feel close connection with other human beings

Both these things are a product of our instincts and they sort of conflict.

I'm more inclined to think that monogamy was an artificial invention proposed to stave off the inevitable conflicts that arise from those who want to keep their partners and those who want to foray with whomever…that and collecting harems of sexual partners to yourself don't really work out mutually for everyone.

When you think about it, monogamy was a pretty necessary invention for the advancement of culture back in 4000BC where things like birth control and womens rights did not exist. One can imagine the drama that could have arisen back in those times without it. I don't think it was all about government control

Only in recent times is polygamy starting to become viable again now that it can be done without so much risk. Of course it has to contest with the fact that everyone now thinks polygamy is for cults

So going back to ponies…

Pony culture seems to be all for monogamy in the same way humans are. Really no way around that. We've seen in canon how marriage is just as much a big deal in the pony world while polygamy receives no representation at all. It's fair to assume that overall, ponies have the exact same monogamous western culture we do

However that's not to say some pony communities do not have that sort of thing. After all Ponies seem to be more open and free-love types than humans are.

If there is polygamy in the ponyverse, it's probably much less taboo or judged than it is here. But mongamy would certainly be preferred for most characters.

If not, I can give up reading the fanfic and continue reading shorter ones until another long story catches my interest.

Part of the problem, here, is that the show is in no way allowed to talk about sex, which kind of makes it impossible for them to elaborate on what kinds of relationships are permitted and what are not.

See, when there is a desire to talk about sex that is being suppressed by social mores, the ways of talking about it tend to proliferate. There is an increase in the number of euphemisms and different slang terms for the specific ways of doing whatever has been banned – it’s like the Streisand Effect, but at the level of language. Think, for example, of the number of different ways we have to say “penis” of “vagina,” but how few synonyms we have for “toe” or “elbow.” It is, paradoxically, the supressed, taboo term that gets the greatest number of signifiers.

But the ponies don’t do that: there is the lack of any public conversation on sex combined with a lack of any effects of that conversation’s suppression. It’s as if they have no sex drive at all. The conversation on sex in Equestria hasn’t been blocked by social mores because – for some reason – there was no drive to have that conversation at all.

My hypothesis: the cutiemarks. Getting one is basically pony puberty – that is, it happens right around the time that they would start to manifest sexual desire. Instead, they get a physical (and, presumably, emotional) connection to some kind of skill or profession. This, here, takes the place in their minds of sex as the object of their omnipresent desire. Which means that they have sex only for reproduction, and instead achieve orgasmic pleasure from engaging in whatever their “special talent” happens to be (just remember that next time you see Twilight using magic, or Fluttershy talking to an animals). On the flip side, it means that if any human were to transform into a pony, that person’s special talent would be “having as much sex as possible.” Maybe that’s not so great.

So, yeah, this post got weird pretty fast.

Oh man guys! I haven't posted since like page 26. I ripped through all of the Humble Bundle comic offerings and took many screenshots I wanted to post and discuss, but I've been too lazy and haven't gotten around to doing any cropping or writing. They were awesome though! I thought Nightmarity was my favorite arc (it's still my favorite art) but they did such a good job with the Shinning Armor x Cadence back story that I probably have 20 crops from that alone that I want to post. I loved it!

What happens if Twilight and her band (EQG2 ref joke, only to the best, so to you, yes to you, you magnificent bastard) will stop every villians who threatening, Equestria or the Harmony and Friendship, then what's going to happen? I have a theory, for this case too, but what about you?

Well, stopping in momentarily because I have a bit of a break before continuing my birthday celebrations, so I'll respond to some stuff here.

I'm definitely sticking with "they're like humans, so they're monogamous", besides the arguments others have mentioned I just REALLY do not want the MLP characters I like to be polygamists…
Also just because they don't talk about sex on-screen doesn't mean they have no sex drives, most people don't talk about it much at all in public but it's considered inappropriate to do so, yet we still have sex drives. Though they could have a little bit less of them, possibly.
Probably gonna stop debating here, mostly because my anti-polygamy attitude is one of those things I know to be right/morally-grounded, but can't really back up very solidly.

Honestly, I don't think this is an issue.
You really can't just run out of bad guys, and even if it happened all the "Mane Six" have other occupations that they could be getting on with instead. Like Twilight with the library and princess stuff, Applejack with the farm, etc.

Even without big season finale villains like Chrysalis, there are still dangerous creatures like Hydras and Cragadiles. I want to see Twilight meeting a Beholder, it has anti-magic powers but also a big arsenal of spells and they are very smart.

Also, there are a lot of areas left to explore in their world.

I followed it up with a <a href = "http://www.fimfiction.net/story/173992/so-you-want-to-be-a-draconequus">hilarious fanfic afterwards, which has Fluttershy trying to be a draconequus. The fanfic uses the bottom pic as the fic's cover art.

I could see polygamy being banned in Equestria if only because it would prevent huge legal clusterfucks (parental custody, divorce settlements, heirs, consent, etc.) from happening.

Then again, some of the best fanfics, use some of the weirdest headcanons (herd mentality, estrus, etc.).

Honestly, it has more to do with culture than with a "sex ban." I can't think of any "adult" shows that do polygamy openly as a norm in that show's universe. Polygamy is, culturally, right up there with sibling/parental incest on the "icky sex" scale. Nobody wants their characters doing it. Even if the writers had the freedom to do sex, they'd be more likely do slash than polygamy do to its stigmatization.

I think you're taking it a little too watsonian. The reason they don't touch on the topic is the same reason AJ's parents haven't been brought up--it's a show for six year old girls and Hasbro doesn't want to deal with a PR nightmare. It's like the "lack of genitalia" debates. People give silly reasons (they're retractile, hidden by fur, etc.) when the real reason is not even HBO would do it.

Additionally, there hasn't really been a scene in the show I can think of that would have lended itself naturally to talking about sex. I don't know about you, but I rarely talk about sex IRL--it's just not a topic that often comes up. The Mane Six may be sex fiends--it's just that in the 22 minutes we see them in, they're doing other things beside sex.

There's also estrus to consider. If a mare's not in estrus, sex is the furthest thing on their mind.

Nightmarity is what actually started to get me away from the comics. The use of S1 Luna combined with the atoner!Luna fanon really showed a discontinuity between it and the show. Given what's recently happened, I'm kind of glad it did.

They go on with their lives like normal. Dash still tries to climb the wonderbolt ladder, Pinkie bakes and parites, Rarity continues to dig for gold, AJ does apples, Fluttershy cares for her animals, and Twilight does princess stuff.

Any of you folks watch tbbbap? I generally don't watch analysis vids, but I find these guys oddly entertaining. Perhaps it's because they don't take it so damn seriously… I dunno.

So, I have read <a href = "http://www.fimfiction.net/story/220615/twilight-manages-to-screw-up-more-than-usual">Twilight Manages to Screw Up More Than Usual, which has Twilight Sparkle gain new friends…I mean, acquaintances to defeat Nightmare Moon and save Equestria. The cast is:

Twilight Sparkle, Vinyl Scratch, Octavia, Lyra, Bon-Bon, and Derpy Hooves

(BTW, this isn't even a spoiler. The cover pic of the art spoils the first arc of the fanfic.)

They each have play an important role that the original mane six played in the actual episode. The most recent chapter has the new mane six confront Nightmare Moon. Twilight tries to use her magic to activate the elements, but the spells she used earlier in the adventure depleted her magic. Nightmare Moon shatters the orbs, but Twilight realizes that the ponies she brought with her represents the Elements of Harmony. They are:

Octavia- Would not leave anypony behind after the cliff collapsed. Represents the Element of Loyalty.
Bon-Bon- Gave away her candies that she packed with her in her trip to the manticore. Represents the Element of Generosity.
Lyra- Her compliments managed to calm the sea serpent down, allowing the new mane six to cross the river. Represents the Element of Kindness.
Vinyl Scratch- Laughed at the fake DJ's who were trying to tempt her to "join their team". Represents the Element of Laughter.
Twilight Sparkle- Throughout the trip, she has been brutally honest to the group about their progress and their mission. Represents the Element of Honesty.
Derpy- Represents the Element of Magic, since the other five have been identified. She even pointed out about Nightmare Moon's smoke throughout the trip, but the others did not listen.

The new mane six acquire their new jewelry, but that's just about it. Celestia approaches and defeats Nightmare Moon herself. She scolds Twilight that she screwed up and that the ponies she brought with her are not the true Bearers of the Elements. She counted on Twilight to find the correct ponies who represented the Elements of Harmony, but put a bit too much faith in Twilight. So with a few more parting words, she carries the imprisoned Nightmare Moon back to Canterlot Castle and raises the sun with her magic. The new mane six decides to head to the hospital to take care of Twilight's broken hoof and Derpy's injured wings.

"Twilight Sparkle- Throughout the trip, she has been brutally honest to the group about their progress and their mission." I don't know why, but I laughed my ass off here, maybe 'coz I can imagine Twilight as a brutally honest mare. Oh god, that sounds like she could kill with her bare honesty, wich sounds interesting though. Actually, I can imagine a fan made series where Twilight would be a rather pessimist, I mean more pessimist than usual, that show would be full of Twilight's sarcastically honest puns and jokes. Hehe, okay now I was the one who overthought something.

Holy crackers! <a href = "http://www.fimfiction.net/blog/419436/you-guys-are-the-absolute-best">According to this guy, his most recent story, "Darth's Warming Eve", has gotten at least four audio readings due to its creativity and clever rhymes. The fanfic's a poem about how the ponies are celebrating Hearth's Warming in Ponyville until Darth Vader and his army shows up to rob the ponies of their gifts and decorations. A filly helps Vader remind him about what Hearth's Warming is, and he decides to return the gifts back to the ponies and celebrate Hearth's Warming with them.

It's a touching story/poem. I highly recommend that you guys read it.

MLP fanfic reading update:

-I read <a href = "http://www.fimfiction.net/story/229453/all-the-mortal-remains">All the Mortal Remains today. It was a very touching story and showed an excellent backstory about the destroyed library and the life of the previous (and deceased) librarian. I won't spoil anything in this post. In case you forgot, the story's about a Mary Sue-like hybrid creature who visits Twilight and her friends. Things go absolutely wrong during the visit. As the group abandons Fluttershy (who is crying after throwing up a bunch of times due to her looking at Magic Pants), they head to Sugarcube Corner, where Pinkie Pie lives. All the ponies who see her scream and run away as soon as they see Magic Pants. The creature tries to soothe the other ponies with her lovely voice (which is described as "as crisp as the morning air", "angel’s choir accompanied by an angel’s marching band", etc.) but to no avail. She even tries to offer them candies that she can produce from her sweet glands, which are actually her sweat glands.

Twilight and Applejack quickly run up to Pinkie Pie before Magic Pants reaches the place. Applejack warns Pinkie that something horrible is about to visit her. Amusingly, Pinkie Pie said that she read her "horrorscope" earlier this morning, which said that she would be "visited by an unimaginable horror" but dismisses the idea quickly. Twilight assures that everything will be okay to Applejack before Magic Pants enters the Corner.

Pinkie Pie greets the weird creature, only to scream on top of her lungs and throw a bunch of cupcakes at it a mere second later. Like everyone else besides Twilight, she cannot bear to stand looking at the weird thing with her own eyes. Magic Pants thinks that Pinkie is giving her gifts and laughs. Realizing that does nothing, she decides to try and kill Magic Pants by burning it with a hairspray and a lighter. Magic Pants shrugs off the attack and thinks that she is performing tricks in front of her. Tired of her efforts, Pinkie runs off to the bathroom to throw up like the other ponies did when they saw her the first time.

Applejack says that they gotta reach Rarity before she sees Magic Pants. Magic Pants overhears the conversation and decides to take the group there directly with her magic. The group teleports before anyone can object.

Anyone else used this as a wallpaper/lockscreen? I've had it as my lockscreen for the past year on this laptop and I still love it. It's professional enough that it looks awesome, and it's subtle enough that no one realizes it's a pony reference. 10/10 best lock screen.

And how they get that? Anyway, are these places were mentioned or shown in the show? Filly Delphia, Las Pegasus, Baltimare, Manehattan, Apple Loosa, are out, I know 'em, also Canterlot, Cloudsdale, obviously, but what's with the others? Mostly Ponyville (jk)?

Yes, most of them were at least mentioned. The comics expanded the official map adding more areas to the south.
