(cont'd from my previous post, because it was reeeeeeeeealllly long)
Author also wrote a deleted scene for the chapter.
<div class = "spoiler" title = "Deleted scene in Chapter 3">
Luna had an idea. There was very little known about King Sombra, but it was understood that every action he made was to grant himself more power. He lived for one purpose: to conquer. She knew his type. They were only happy when their enemies were crushed and driven before them. If his personality still existed, then a challenge to his arrogance would bring it out.
“King Sombra,” she began. “You wish for us to trust you, but you still refer to yourself as king. Does this not signify ambition for the throne? ‘Tis sedition at the very least. If you wish to put our fears at ease, and honestly mean us no harm, then we require a token of submission. A sign of good faith, if you will.” She considered for a moment what to do before the corner of her mouth rose complacently. “Remove thy crown.”
They wanted my crown? Was she serious? Aw, man, but I really liked that thing. Feeling surprisingly protective of my headgear, I put a hoof over it in case they tried to snatch it off me.
Shining Armor’s eyes narrowed. “You’re hesitating.” As far as he was concerned, any indications of Sombra’s previous personality – in this case his desire to rule – was enough cause to prepare for a fight.
“Do I really have to?” I asked. Their firm expressions told me everything I needed to know, so I sighed in disappointment. “Fine, here you go.” Relenting, I tried to slip it off.
Well, tried to, at least. “Hmm?” Unfortunately, the thing was stuck on my head pretty well. An experimental yank accomplished nothing beyond pulling my hair.
“We’re waiting, Sombra.” Any one of them could have said that.
“I’m trying. It’s just…” Another tug. “Hold on. Just give me a minute.”
What the heck, was it glued to my skull? It certainly felt like it. “Hrrrrrrrng!” Both hooves under the base of the crown, I shoved as hard as I could. “Ow! Man, that’s stuck.”
The crown didn’t even have enough leeway to wiggle it back and forth until it came loose. “Grrrrk! NNNGH!” I struggled. Attempting, short rapid-fire pushes failed to budge it even slightly. “Hrnt! Grnt! Hrnt! Oh, for crying out loud! HRRRRRRRRRRRRNNNNGGGH!”
Cadence suddenly found her meal incredibly interesting and Luna stared out of the closest window. They both had the same thought, but neither could admit it out loud; the more Sombra strained, the more he sounded like he was having a difficult time in the bathroom.
“HNNNNGH!” I grunted. “It just won’t go!”
Leaving the table, I angled my head to the floor and resumed my battle. Hopefully, gravity would help remove this thing. “GET. OFF! When that didn’t work, I curled into a ball and pressed with all four hooves.
Luna had regrets. “Um… nevermind, you can stop now,” she offered.
“No, I totally got this.” My voice brimmed with determination.
The fact that I had an audience of royalty – consisting of a high queen, a prince-general, the mistress of this very palace, and also Luna – no longer mattered to me. It was like those times when you just couldn’t open a pickle jar. At a certain point, you no longer cared about the pickles and just wanted to defeat the insolent thing.
“Hrrrrrrrr… It’s moving! I can feel it!” Almost there. Come on, almost there. “GrrrrrrAAAAH! Got it!”
With one final push, the firmly adhered crown popped off my head. It flew across the dining hall in a long arc, bouncing with several metallic clangs until it rattled to a stop like a lost hubcap. “There!” I boasted. “You happy now?”
I cheerfully trotted back to my seat, sporting the smuggest, most victorious grin possible. Take that, Luna.
Cadence, who was taking a bite of her food when the crown sprung off, took one look at me and choked. “That!” she coughed, “that was part of the crown!?” Even as she pounded her chest to clear her airways, she never stopped staring at me with obvious astonishment.
“Wha?” Perplexed, I crossed my eyes to see what she was gawking at and immediately saw the issue. Taking off my crown revealed that the tall, red spike on top of my head was really a protective sleeve for a normal, grey unicorn horn of roughly the same dimensions.
“Huh.” I was just as surprised as everyone else by the revelation. “Well, would’ja look at that. Who knew?” I then rubbed a hoof along the horn, trying to picture its size and shape and sincerely hoping it was bigger than average. The black facial protection was also part of the crown, so the sideburn-like protrusions and snout-armor no longer adorned my face. Nothing was left but dark grey fur and a mop of black hair.
“You almost look… normal,” Cadence said hesitantly. There was no hiding how disturbed she was. Monsters were supposed to look like monsters, and the fact that Sombra could look like anypony else was not a welcome realization. Other than his distinctive clothing, especially that cape he seemed so fond of, the only difference between him and any given unicorn was his sharp canines. Her stomach churned at the thought that he could blend in with a crowd just by closing his mouth.
“Really?” I smiled happily. “That’s great news! I should’ve taken that thing off a long time ago.”
Or not. Cadence took some solace in the fact that Sombra’s nonstop prattling and omnipresent grin meant that he’d never keep his mouth closed long enough to remain undetected.
But it wasn’t much of a comfort.
And that's it for the fanfic so far. The last time the author posted in his page, he said that the current chapter that he is working on is 25,000 words long. I hope he releases it soon and continues this wonderful story, because I love every part of the story!
