Random fanfic reading update time!

Well, I have officially broke the two million word mark thanks to the stories I have recently read. Here are those stories:

Discord Punches Twilight in the Face – Twilight Sparkle has stolen Discord's book without his permission. Discord is mad. Very, VERY mad. This fanfic portrays Discord very well, especially when he is serious.

Let Sleeping Gods Lie – So why did Luna not attend the wedding in S02E26? Because she needed tons of sleep to make up for the time that she lost due to her overnight duty over watching over the Canterlot Castle. This is followed by the changelings' attempts at trying to wake Luna up, which does not go well for the changelings.

The Moony Maiden – Who is the Moony Maiden and what kinds of stories does this pony write? Celestia tries to solve this mystery, and it turns out that her very own sister is that mysterious pony. (The cover art and the story's description gives this away, though.)

Luna and the Cookie Jar – Young Luna and Celestia bake cookies. Luna wants to eat one right away.

Pinkie Pie's Last Nightmare Night – Pinkie dresses up as Princess Celestia for Nightmare Night and pulls pranks on a couple of ponies.

TWILIGHT SPARKLE FIXES EVERYTHING – STORY ABOUT TWILIGHT "AWESOME" SPARKLE AND HOW AWESOME HER LIFE IS! THE BEST CRACKFIC FIC EVER!!!!!!!!!!

Here are some updates from the stories I am currently following as well:

Letters from an Irritated Princess – The story is currently on hold due to the mid-season hiatus.

Tiny Twilight Tales – The most recent chapter's about how Twilight developed her fear of quesadillas.

I Am Going To Save And/Or Destroy Equestria! – The story's currently at 93,841 words right now, which makes it officially the longest fanfic I have read in my tracking list.

…And It's Freaking Cold Up Here – Silver Spoon?! What are you doing in this perilous journey? Well, it looks like she's gonna stick with the main human character who is stuck inside Snowdrop's body for the rest of the adventure. The dream sequences are my favorite parts of the story, since the other characters get to know how the main human character looks like when he's not a pony.

Pinkie Personalities – In the story's most recent events, Pinkie Pie's Pinkamena personality has decided to give up pursuing for Twilight Sparkle since she is the only one in love with her while Pinkie Pie is not. Also, the story no longer has the "Romance" tag; the author decided that once the story is over with, he'll try to work out the shipping between Twilight and Pinkamena (good thing Pinkamena's friendly and mature in this story).

What I've Done – Haven't read the latest chapter yet, but I'm glad to see that it has been updated.

The Slumber of GaiaOMG!!!!!!!! YES! The story has been updated! I'm so glad to be reading more about Gaia's adventures in Equestria!

Anyone notice how people keep saying the Brony fandom is dead lately? Does anyone know what's causing this? Because I go onto this site and see "MLP is dead" then go to EqD to view the three fan animations made today. I know it's after the 2013 surge and all, but that can't be the reason can it?

I made a note of this a few pages ago. It's not "Dead" but it's not the hype machine it was in 2011. I blame that year long hiatus between S4 and S5. Then of course who can forget about all the hiatuses IN THE MIDDLE of Season 5 that's killing off the hype.

It's still alive elsewhere on the internet. 8ch for instance. Here seems dead cus honestly I think Pony General has lost it's touch. We had fun here once, we ruled KYM once, we had power once. All that is gone now and you only have yourselves to blame for that. We were strong when we stuck together, we were stronger when the mods let us police our own board, we were strong when we posted here more than any other board.

Pony General was strongest when there was much to discuss back in Season 2

Discussionfags like Verbose, Crazymoon/Harshwhinny, Phoneix, Algernon and Platus were still on the ride and wanted to make fan theories.

We had pony shitposters posting exclusively in here because at the time, posting pony was new, controversial and interesting.

What happened is people grow up. The older posters like, Myself, Moon, Verbose, we found our studies finishing and our careers starting. With that came less time to dedicate to one thread. I barely post here for that reason.

The younger posters matured and found more hobbies that just pony shitposting, either that or life started hitting them and they starting packing up drama and leaving over it

We all knew this point would come, even back in Pony General 3. MLP is 5 years old now and the fandom is showing its age. The old days of hype are well in the past. We've already exploded into a supernova. Now we're a white dwarf

The fandom will mature and will likely become more like the Furry fandom is now: Existing quietly in the background of the internet as a niche art hobby.

But the porn will last for eternity :)

That's funny cus the way I see it is, originally it was the child of 4chan brought here. At first the community had a lil discussion about it. We discussed how rules of the internet applied, i.e. the more you hate the stronger it gets, the more pure something is the better it is to corrupt it, Rule34, etc. Pony General died for a bit and gained strength in the form of memes, art and D'aww. We discussed episodes and we discussed memes. Since I am one of the so called "shitposters" you are talking about my take is that the ones who overly discussed every fucking little detail of the show, the fanfics and took EQD as the word of god are the fedora wearing bronies that are killing it. The ones that are the so called "shitposters" who were in it for the memes and trolling always hated that side of the fandom that become too pure to clop, shitpost or be a troll. We hated when mainstream took over and it went from /b/ronys to bronys. We started to call ourselves ponefags to stray from that fedora brony bulshit. When 4chan made /mlp/ some thought it was a good thing some of us thought the nazi brone mods there made it nothing like what it was on /b/. Some of us shitposters stayed on /b/ as long as possable. Lately /b/ is over-run by /s4s/ and /r9k/ and has turned to utter shit but now with 8ch we do have what we want, a place to circlejerk and post pony.
If yo ask me nothing takes away the fun of posting memes more than LONG, DRAWN OUT conversations, users and mods complaining about what you post when others post the same shit or worse with no complaints.
I remember pages that we would dedicate to a single theme on Pony General, the times we would just AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA for no reason other than Sweetie Belle derails were fun. I remember when we came up with the NSFW tags and buttons because we had too many pure bronies that couldn't hack. Funny how Clop threads on riff raff get more attention than Pony General these days. I remember when we used to talk here the way we would use the IRC. We could go through a page in an few hours not weeks or months. I remember when an episode came out the memes and art work that came out would be posted here in minutes now I hardly see a meme uploaded after an episode.

TL;DR
So you ask what is killing MLP fandom? Simple. It's killing itself.

Sorry to break the discussion of the fandom dying out, but I drew more stuff, mostly because I still enjoy this type of stuff.

Here's a reference to my old (and now deleted) ask blog from 2014 and such.

Also, trying to draw pone laying down.

Here's some OCs you've may seen me draw from time-to-time.

Also, should I move my drawings to their own thread?

@Platus

Sorry. I momentarily forgot you existed. I should probably talk to you more.

@Vaz

So do you propose we spam pony memes like we used to?

You might as well. It's not like we got much else going in this thread and all the people who normally would complain about that [cougherbose] ain't exactly here to do that.

What do we have? 20 new pony meme entries thanks to Particle Mare? So we've got plenty of new resources. Go nuts.

@Filler

If you want to, you can start a thread in the Creative board, but here is perfectly fine as long as it's pone related.

Great work, btw

I can't wait.

@Comic
Haven't seen that one yet, but the apple invasion one's really shitty. They took a Syfy Original Movie plot, and decided to play it straight with none of the ham and cheese you'd expect and need from that kind of plot. The main comic series has just been sputtering along ever since the bull arc crippled it. I really think they need some new talent to freshen things up and bring in some cool worldbuildy kind of plots. Enough of the apples. Enough of the "my mom's a crystal" villain backstories. Enough of the nonsensical plots that crumple to pieces when the slightest bit of logic is applied.

You're not helping, Curnow. In fact, you're probably the root of the problem.

So do you propose we spam pony memes like we used to?

but my point and something I forgot to add in my previous statement was that at one time the mlp fandom was so strong that 4chan and Moot feared it now how powerful do you think /mlp/ is? As a mater of fact how powerful is 4chan? How much power does KYM Pony General have these days? The only entry with any power right now is GG and they really aren't a threat.

You forgot the most important thing we're waiting for right now…..THE SECOND FUCKING HALF TO SEASON 5!

Something I noticed while drawing I noticed that I wanted to bring up here since it sounds… Like a thing that may raise discussion. (and also because I'm tired of putting all my art thoughts on my personal mod blog.)

In a page of about 30 characters, most of which are ponies… Despite having started with a Copy/pasted body for a few, which worked for a while… By the time I got to some of the characters I've drawn more often, I started thinking "this body is wrong for this pony". And it was different for each pony.

One pony I decided needed to have bigger hips, another needed smaller, another needed to have a body that wasn't as long… And yet I don't find myself thinking any are less attractive than the others, I find they look better specifically because their bodies aren't the same cookie cutter body type I used earlier in the process.

So… I guess drawing pony bodies so many times is making me realize the beauty of body diversity?

Or maybe I just some some well established head canons on what my characters look like compared to each other. I don't know.

Well, since I brought up the topic of body types (and 90% of the time the show uses the exact same body type), does anyone have a headcanon on how the bodies of each of the mane 6 differs from each other?

Wow, that screenshot is beautiful.

More to my point. That similar degree of drama has already happened in the fandom. Also wasn't there a hidden orgy at one of the bronycons? Although at least it wasn't out on public on a car hood during a family fundraising event.

But while I meant exactly what I said. Your example is not what I meant. I was talking about the current standing of the furry fandom as a niche hobby (as opposed to the exact delinquency that goes on in it) and how it's likely the MLP fandom will slide into that same category. Especially since both fandom are already strikingly similar as it is.

Can't deny that the fandoms influence on the internet is far less than what it was. It's no longer 'everywhere', and while some miserable fucks still get trolled by ponies, most of what the fandom does seldom gets attention. Maybe that's because at this point nobody is shocked and surprised by grown men liking a girls show anymore and it stopped being ironic

But why do you seem kinda hung up on power? What does it matter unless you like to organize raids? I'm just here to look at adorable horse pictures

Just here to look at adorable candy colored magical talking horses learning about the power of friendship? Bullshit, don't you know Ponies are serious business?

No not hung up, just stating fact that we were once strong and now not so much. Also I don't get the organized raid part, when did we ever organize raids? We just fought to be allowed to post pone. That's not really a raid.

@State of pony
This forum has definitely slowed since when I first got here, but it has a pretty solid core of users who have been posting for a long time and will probably keep posting for a while yet. I've been here three years, and I was stalking since before that, but I'm still churrning out a post or two every page. We gain some, we lose some, but many of us are here forever. That includes you, Grandpa Vaz, you delightfully grizzled old nectarine you.

Stunthead fanfic reading update Part 1/1!

I may not be as devoted a fanfiction reader as Yoshi or the like, but if there's one thing I'm very, VERY good at, it's feeling left out! And there's one little sub-fandom that's always been pounding at the back of my head, shouting "Hey Stunt! Don't you want to understand the in-jokes? Aren't you sick of picking up all those tiny little spoilers that are slowly wittling away potential future enjoyment? What, do you WANT Twilight Sparkle to be disappointed?" So, after at least a full year of being a little pansy about it, I finally decided to make like a purple princess and READ A BOOK for once in my damn life!
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you…

A fanfiction 607,282 words in the making! If I can read that, I'm sure you smug lugs can spare a fraction of your free-time to read this post. I need at least someone to convince me this whole thing wasn't just a huge waste of my time. I've avoided spoilers where I can!

  • Let me start by saying that finding out what happened to the canon characters was always a treat, especially for the Mane 6 and the CMC. The memory orbs and recordings of them were some of the best and most creative the fic had to offer, and finding out how they died gave a sense of grim finality… hence why I was a tad disgruntled that not all of their mysteries were solved in the end, but like the fic says, sometimes it's good to have mysteries. Special shout-out to the FIRST ministry mare they find. That was a game changer.
  • Other special mentions go to Diamond Tiara and Trixie. DT's story was… impressively cruel. Much respect to the author for not being afraid to go all out, because it really payed off, especially there. As for Trixie, that first message left by her was great for the opposite reason. It was very subtle, very underplayed and meant nearly nothing, but in turn that made it one of the sadder messages in the story… just another good soul lost to the war. Of course, then they reveal more of what happened to her and it sorta flies in the face of that, but it was still damn good while it lasted.
  • Two standout scenes: Littlepip trapped in the room slowly being filled with hot air, struggling to fight back the waves of dizziness and unconsciousness. What a great scenario, and it was executed with every bit of dizzying description that it needed. But my favourite scene still has to be Littlepip first leaving the stable. It painted such a picture of exactly how big of a shock stepping outside was to the poor mare, and that's not something I expected the fic to dwell on. I thought it would skip straight to "What is this place filled with so many wonders?" Instead they went the "Instantly collapse and almost vomit" route. Maybe I just have a thing for scenes that describe dizziness.
  • The struggle with addiction was introduced naturally and built up slowly, always keeping me wondering "When is the line finally going to be crossed?"
  • Chapter 5 almost lost my interest, but then along came Stable 24. Solving what happened there was like a lovely little puzzle – a story within a story. Same with stable 29. Trying to figure out what happened alongside the characters was such a good time. Even Stable 2 had a ticking timebomb waiting to go off. The Goddess was a great little puzzle as well. The realization regarding her was like a wet slap to the face. I'm pretty sure I went "Aww SH*T" when I figured it out. Wonderful storytelling.
  • Calamity rekt Red Eye so hard during that one part when he had imprisoned Littlepip. I could hear the "Black Guys React" video playing in my head as I read it.
  • The sexual frustration Littlepip had towards Velvet was suitably frustrating. I'm pretty sure I was physically writhing out of sympathy for the poor mare. When they finally came out and addressed it, it was such a weight lifted off my shoulders. If thay had left that there even a second longer I may have popped something in my brain and bled out.
  • Lion and Mouse were only in the story for the shortest time, but something about them really appealed to me. Maybe it was the hamminess.
  • THE ENDING WAS MUCH SADDER THAN I HAD ANTICIPATED. I THOUGHT I WAS READY. I WAS NOT.
  • Some of the earlier action scenes felt a bit muddly. Perhaps I was just catching up to the speed the fic was travelling at, but Shattered Hoof in particular felt like it could have been handled with a little more clarity, though the DT recordings and the Room Of Hot Air did save it in the end. There were also some later scenes that got a little up-their-own-backsides slinging around all the terminology for the different types of war vehicles and I just… zoned out a little.
  • Perhaps this is just a side-effect of growing used to the style, but it felt that while the action scenes got better, the number of stand-out moments got fewer. You'll probably notice that most of that stuff in the "good" section was from the first half of the fic.
  • The fic skipped out on showing us any of Littlepip's first attempt at using stealth. It didn't require an explaination, but it at least required a more direct addressing than "By the way, I did this for a bit but nothing that important happened so I left it out."
  • The first fight against the raiders in the library kicked it into high gear rather quickly. I understand she had panic, drive and S.A.T.S on her side, but that seemed a little jarring. One minute she gets her first kill by accident, the next she's killing SIX raiders. Did it have to be six? Couldn't it have been three or so to start with? I know it sets the bar for the rest of the fic, but it's a lot to take in all at once, especially seeing as that's also where they introduce healing potions.
  • Some sense of disatisfaction whenever they were safe and sound in New Appleloosa, R-7 or Tenpony Tower with no specific goals in mind. Like the story could end there and it wouldn't really matter.
  • The story had this annoying habit of leaving out details and not telling you if it was going to fill you in a few paragraphs later or if it was expecting you to have figured it out on your own. Or if you had just missed something. Particuarly bad offender was the escape from the pegasi zombies. I re-read that 3 times before I figured out I was just supposed to wait.
  • In many ways I would have rather it stayed a simple survivor story instead of expanding out as much as it did, but I can forgive that on the grounds that that's not the story they wanted to tell.
  • I can see why it has a following, and it's making me seriously not want to continue work on that post-apocolyptic MLP story that I had been working on. I had a crazy amount of ideas that were already done by this fic and now the 100% original stuff is left in ribbons. Perhaps if I had read this story sooner I wouldn't be in this mess.
  • I spoiled myself on many VERY IMPORTANT TWISTS before reading, and MANY MORE while reading. I blame the story. If it didn't keep making me think I missed stuff I wouldn't have kept looking it up on the wiki. Then again, maybe I'm the problem, seeing as I do this literally every time I try to read or watch something new.
  • A fake spoiler lead me to believe something that wasn't going to happen was going to happen. I liked what the story did better, but it's sorta like being promised a scented candle and being given a toaster instead. Yes, the toaster is better, if I had to choose I would choose the toster, but… I had already picked out a spot for that candle…
  • I TOTALLY thought the ponies of Arbu were going to be revealled to just be feeding the chopped-up ponies to the Radigators rather than being cannibals. Just as a way to get rid of the bodies and keep the gators happy. If that had happened, it would have been SOUL CRUSHING to Littlepip to know she killed them all for no reason. I can't decide if I like my idea better or not.

    • Humorously, you can tell when season 2 episodes started coming out because the writer makes references to the episodes almost completely in order of airdate. That seemed like a bad idea to me. Better to quit while ahead and just say anything past Season 1 will not be referenced. We did get Lion and Mouse out of it, though, so no complaints for now.
    • I'm glad to finally get the references, and I will now spend the rest of my free time for the next 2 weeks catching up on all the Fallout Equestria fanworks that I have been avoiding for years now.

Overall, I'm glad I read it. It was a great story without a doubt, because even just 5 chapters is a long time to hold my attention when it comes to fanfiction, let alone 45. If you haven't read it and you think you'll like it, you probably will, so it gets a recommendation from me. Now please stop trying to get me to read things, Twilight, this is starting to hurt…

@Platus
Ah, thanks for posting it. I totally forgot about it because i was too busy procrastinating/playing Warframe. Now i need 1 hour of free time to watch it…
>Still one-a-season too. The AMV Hell people should hook them up for a productivity lesson.
It's funny because ZephyrStar also worked on AMV Hell. The long wait is because Anthology is composed mostly of animations now instead of a lot of PMVs like the first one.

@Stunthead
I'll never read it (or any fanfic at all) because i have the attention span of a Pinkie Pie clone in the middle of a grand galloping gala but i respect Fallout: Equestria for becoming kind of a subculture within the MLP subculture.

What's your opinion on the fangame? I heard that they made a demo for this year's BronyCon.

I loved "Saddleship" and "A Heart for Sweetie Belle". "Saddleship" was brilliant, because it was a collab by Pikapetey and Kanashii, who are both well-known for their frame-by-frame hand-drawn animations. And "A Heart for Sweetie Belle" was pretty hilarious and a bit disturbing at the same time.

And as for the Pony Parade? That was freaking cute! And it was made by the guy who made the D&D shorts in the previous anthologies, too! That one was my favorite short of the Anthology.

I also loved the Applejack's eyebrow adventure short. It was random and hilarious at the same time.

Also, yay for the paper ponies in the credits scene!

I've recently found myself asking a few questions on Equestrian Astronomy… But also Astrology, in a sense; mainly in using not only the Sun and Moon to tell the time of day, but also using the Stars to tell months, years, and even ages.

In our world, Astrological Solar Months, in absence of a set reference point of where a year starts and ends, are defined mostly by what section of the plane of stars the sun is situated in front of from our point of reference. Many of you are familiar with this, and Astrological tradition calls this one's "Sun Sign".

However, in Equestria… This wouldn't be quite so simple, since if we take the show's claim both Sun and Moon orbit Equestria (because of Magic) as true, then the Sun signs likely don't align to months.

This is where I have to start making assumptions, and start building a headcanon.

Presumably, the gravity of a moon sized Sun, and an actual Moon orbiting Equestria should cause it to spin at least slowly in the same direction as the sun/moon. So assuming the rest of the stars maintain a relatively fixed position; then their position in the sky should change as Equestria turns. In theory, the Equestrian sign that is in the highest position in the sky from their location would be the "Star sign", or month. (By Equestrian reckoning) While the Sun and Moon signs would instead indicate the hour of one's birth rather than the month.

Following this context, it would follow that a "year" in Equestria is measured by an entire rotation of the planet.

However… It gets complicated when calculating an "Age"; since In our world, an Astrological Age is determined by the "Procession of the Equinoxes", and the "Sun Sign" that occurs during it. This is caused by gradual changes in the Axis of our planet. We enter a new age a little over every 2000 years, and in theory, the Age of Aquarius starts in 600 years from now.

The question of whether Equestria even has an Axle progression is difficult, given that if its axle tilt is relative to the sun, it would lead to natural seasons, which is not the case. However, if Equestria has an Axle tilt relative to the stars, with both Sun and Moon staying in line with the Equator (which explains the frozen north despite weather ponies), then if it has a progression, the latitude of the signs in the sky will change over time. So its fair to assume that ages could be determined by which sign reaches the highest latitude in its month (Which… Let's say is 45 Degrees North for simplicity sake, since any more and its possible its opposing sign wouldn't even be visible in its month).

Which… Pretty much wraps this up actually.

Now… Here's a some MLP Astrological Trivia:

In "Its about Time" Twilight makes an observation on the "Horse head Nebula". Interestingly enough, during the day (and more interestingly, right before she gets blinded by the sun).

Regardless of if Equestria was Planet Centric or Sun Centric; if their constellations have any resemblance to ours, it means that during that Episode, then since the Horsehead Nebula is inside Orion, which is situated near Tauros, it would date the Episode as being May, or one of the surrounding months.

So… Yeah.
