90s Simpsons Screencap is an AI prompt used to generate images that appear to be from the 1990s The Simpsons seasons. The format, which has been used to create offensive images similar to Offensive AI Pixar memes and parodies, achieved virality on X / Twitter in late October and early November 2023.

Origin

On October 27th, 2023, X[1] / Twitter user @viperwave posted four AI-generated images based on versions of the prompt "90s Simpsons screencap," recommending the prompt due to AI "having no idea how to scale characters" and "occasionally just inventing new Simpsons." The post received over 1,800 reposts and 23,000 likes in one week (post and two images shown below).

In the thread, multiple users responded with AI-generated images based on the prompt. For example, X[2] user @AnimeSerbia posted an AI-generated image featuring a Black character that resembled Marge Simpson. The post (shown below, left) gained over 80 reposts and 4,900 likes. Also in that thread, X[3] user @paynushurts posted four AI-generated images imagining Bart Simpson and Milhouse van Houten as perpetrators of the Columbine High School shooting. The post garnered over 510 reposts and 6,000 likes in three days (shown below, right).

For example, on October 27th, 2023, YouTuber Justin Whang made a thread of AI-generated Simpsons images, with the opening post gaining over 470 reposts and 8,500 likes in one week (shown below, left).[4] On November 2nd, X[5] user @jnyboy posted an image referencing the 2017 Las Vegas Strip Shooting that gained over 170 reposts and 2,000 likes in one day (shown below, right).

I'd guess that it would be because of a combination of the large volume of available images, the relatively simplistic designs and art style and the fame and notoriety of The Simpsons making it more difficult to get wrong than it would be to get right.

I mean, the usual errors and artifacts are still there for anything that's not a Simpsons character, just look at the guns in this one, they're blurry, distorted and somewhat bizarre-looking in addition to being connected together in aberrant and even impossibly wrong manners, like you'd expect from a normal AI image generator, most likely as a result of them not being nearly as ubiquitous as the rest of the image.
