A A Folou / Ai Ai Folou / A A Follow are Portuguese misinterpretations of the lyrics "I, I follow" from The Magician’s remix of the 2011 song "I Follow Rivers" by Lykke Li. In 2021, stock photos of Jack Russell Terriers became associated with the phrases after a viral video featuring the dogs and the song went viral in Brazil.
Origin
The earliest known post of the video showing Jack Russell terriers (JRTs) on white backgrounds while The Magician's remix of Lykke Li's "I Follow Rivers" played came in a June 5th, 2021 tweet[1] by Twitter user @aljcky. It gained over 500 likes before being deleted and it is unclear if the user was the creator of the video. The earliest found YouTube upload was posted[2] on June 15th, 2021 by Naver, garnering over 32,000 views in almost three months (shown below).
All of the JRT photos in the video were taken[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] by Ukrainian photographer Iryna Kalamurza, who also goes by the usernames flydragonfly and Fly_dragonfly. Kalamurza has taken over 1,000 stock photos of JRTs.[14]
Spread
The meme spread slowly from June through July before blowing up in August. On August 5th, TikTok user dipssybab posted[15] a remix of the A A Folou slideshow that gained over 210,000 likes and 910,000 views in just over a month (shown below, left). More than 11,700 TikToks using the sound from dipssybab’s video were made[16] in the same period. TikToker profdenisalexandre uploaded[17] a video on August 8th featuring an A A Folou dog that accumulated over 740,000 likes and 31 million views in a month (shown below, right).

On August 8th, Kalamurza acknowledged the meme’s popularity on her TikTok account for her dog, mayadogjackrussell, by reposting[18] the A A Folou video and thanking Brazilian fans.
On August 9th, Twitter user @dolcefrary posted[19] a Twitter thread of dog memes, the first tweet of which contained A A Folou and received over 44,000 likes and 8,200 retweets. On September 1st, Twitter user @iwpiws made[20] a similar thread that accumulated over 170,000 likes and 32,000 retweets.
