Origin

On June 21st, 2020, Instagam^[1] user inkwithblood posted an life advice quote reading, "A girl that remains loyal to you without a relationship is a girl you should marry". The post (shown below) received over 21,200 likes in four years.

Spread

In the following months, the quote was widely circulated online through reposts. For example, on July 9th, 2020, Instagram^[2] account relationshipquotesofficial reposted the quote, with the post gaining over 4,800 likes in four years.

On December 29th, 2020, Instagram^[3] account parasocialism posted the earliest found six memes based on the image, replacing the middle part of the quote with other descriptors (example shown below). The post garnered over 35,000 likes in four years.

More versions of the meme were shared by users on Instagram,^[4] Amino,^[5] Pinterest^[6] and other platforms starting in late 2020.

On September 4th, 2024, X^[7] user @SlLENTPRINCESS posted a version of the meme altered to "A girl that stays up until 2am playing these games is a girl you should marry" with cover images of nine The Legend of Zelda edited in. The post (shown below) received over 780 reposts and 6,600 likes in two months.

The subformat achieved viral popularity on X / Twitter in early October 2024, with users adding various video games to the template.
