Fitness Quotes With Drunk People, also known as Fitness Quotes With Alcohol and Drunkspiration, are a meme trend in which the creator alters the meaning of a popular fitness or lifestyle-related motivational quote by putting it over the image of a drunk person in the form of an image macro. The juxtaposition of the two gives a conflicting message about addiction and depression rather than making healthy choices. The trend is especially popular on Reddit and Pinterest and rose to a second wave of popularity in June 2021.

Origin

Exactly when this trend began online is unknown, but some of the earliest examples date to 2013. On September 12th, 2013, an Imgur gallery dubbed "Drunkspiration" was uploaded to Reddit’s /r/funny^[1] by Redditor u/evelee. It received 3,300 upvotes and 994 comments in eight years. Several of the images in this gallery went on to be featured in numerous articles and Pinterest memes, particularly one (seen below) of an elderly woman drinking wine accompanied by a motivational fitness quote.

Spread

Several stock images of drunk people have become more widely used than others in these memes since they originated. For example, one image of a woman sadly holding a glass of alcohol to her forehead has been widely used since 2013 (seen below). The earliest known use of this particular image comes from a September 2013 web article on The Chive.^[2]

On June 26th, 2021, this meme was revamped with a different quote during the first day of the second wave of memeing fitness quotes with drunk people on /r/memes.^[3] This new meme (seen below) was posted by u/Darkest_Pingas and received 47 upvotes and five comments in three days.^[4]

2021 Resurgence

After these and a handful of other images were shared throughout the internet in the following years, there was renewed interest in the trend on Reddit in June 2021. On June 26th, Redditor u/JustJoshin_13 uploaded an example (seen below) to /r/memes,^[5] titled "Adding fitness quotes to drunk people." It received 45 upvotes and was soon followed by many similar posts from other users shortly after.
