About

"About a Week Ago" is a lyric from the 2014 hip hop song “Hot Nigga” by American rapper Bobby Shmurda. On Vine, it is closely associated with a series of dance videos in which people quote the phrase while performing Shmurda's signature dance known as the "Shmoney."

Origin

On July 25th, 2014, Brooklyn rapper Shmurda’s lead single “Hot Nigga” from his debut EP album Shmurda She Wrote was released (shown below, left). That same day, Viner DontéMacc posted a video in which he performs the "Schmoney dance" while “Hot Nigga” plays in the background (shown below, right).

On August 3rd, 2014, YouTuber Axel Blake uploaded a video titled "About a week ago – Shmoney Dance," featuring short skits in which he begins dancing when saying the phrase "about a week ago" in conversation (shown below). In the first five months, the video gained over 920,000 views and 300 comments.

On September 8th, YouTuber Lozersayswhat uploaded a video titled "About a Week Ago," featuring a montage of clips in which he approached by his younger brother who repeatedly performs the Schmoney dance while saying the phrase "about a week ago" (shown below, left). On September 26th, the Vine Trends Compilations YouTube channel uploaded a compilation of "About a Week Ago" Vines, gathering upwards of 1.9 million views and 860 comments in three months (shown below, right).
