About
Are You Joking? You Said Your Phone Was Taken Away, also known as Are You Serious? You Said You Couldn't Use Your Phone or Are You Kidding Me? You Said Your Phone Was Broken, is a copypasta that often gets used as a spam comment on TikTok. Starting in mid-2021, the phrase has continued to see usage while having minor variations done to it in reference to the person reading it having their phone either taken away or being broken, yet they are still leaving comments on TikTok or other social media, making the poster angry and ending their relationship.
Origin
One of the earliest examples of the copypasta is found in a TikTok uploaded by TikToker masteroftheblaster[1] on June 8th, 2021. In this TikTok, they have the words to the copypasta shown on the screen, put on top of a black-and-white photo of Liam Payne with the words "somebody loves you but it's not me" being visible (shown below).
@masteroftheblaster Are u serious? You said you couldn’t use your phone and now I see your comment 😐 good job, we’re really over. Don’t ever write #ruserious ♬ original sound – ✞𝙍𝘼𝙃 ✞

Spread
The copypasta would remain mostly used in comment sections from 2022 to mid-2023 when it made a resurgence online. On March 19th, 2023, TikToker clydesdeadmom[2] uploaded a TikTok in which they were confused as to why people were using the copypasta in comments on their TikToks, helping to bring more attention to the copypasta as they received over 20,000 views and 600 likes in 10 months (shown below).

As 2023 went on, the copypasta started to change, with different wording being used in place of why the phone was supposedly not available and what the person's incredulous response was to seeing that the person commented despite their phone being unavailable.
For example, on July 14th, 2023, TikToker .cxolin_[3] uploaded a TikTok that showed this change in wording, having the phrase go from "Are You Serious? You said you couldn't user your phone and now I see your comment good job, we're really over. Don't ever write" to "are you kidding me… you said your phone was broken and I see you comenting, we're over… kys" (shown below).
