As Fuck (AF) is an English-language slang term used to emphasize and intensify an adjective. It is typically abbreviated "AF."

Origin

While has likely been used outside of popular culture, the earliest and most-widely reported usage of the phrase "as fuck" comes from the American rap song "Straight Outta Compton" by N.W.A. Released as the album's first single on July 10th, 1988, the song features the lyrics, "So when I'm in your neighborhood, you better duck / Coz Ice Cube is crazy as fuck / As I leave, believe I'm stompin / But when I come back, boy, I'm comin straight outta Compton."^[1]

Other songs on the album, including the second single, "Fuck tha Police", also include the phrase "as fuck."

Spread

On April 11th, 2000, American rapper Del the Funky Homosapien released the song "Fake as Fuck."^[2]

Later that year, on September 11th, 2000, the radical anarchist politics website CrimethInc.^[3] published an article entitled "Your Politics Are Boring As Fuck."

Three years later, on February 25th, 2004, Urban Dictionary ^[4] user infinity defined the phrase as "Phrase commonly used by silly Welsh people who have limited vocabulary. It is an easy way out for describing how good something is." The post (shown below) received more than 70 upvotes in 14 years.

On February 2nd, 2009, a page for the expression was added to "Wiktionary."^[5]

The abbreviation for "As Fuck," "AF" (sometimes written "asf") was first defined by Urban Dictionary^[6] user Mr McDownage on October 10th, 2011 as "The acronym stands for 'as fuck.'" Within seven years, the definition (shown below) received more than 5,600 upvotes.

The phrase has been frequently used as an abbreviation on Twitter, where character counts can prohibit lengthy posts (examples below).

On June 7th, 2015, Twitter^[7] @whitepplquote tweeted,^[7] "Saying 'af' instead of 'As Fuck.'" The post (shown below) received more than 2,000 retweets and 3,500 likes in three years.

Three years later, on June 7th, 2018, The Daily Dot ^[8] published an article about the history of "AF" and its use on social media.
