About
The Baki Smile With Finger or Yujiro Hanma Smile is a method of smiling where you place your finger in front of your mouth as if telling someone to shush, using the tip of your finger to raise your upper lip and the bottom of your finger to push your lower lip downward, then smile and widen your eyes. The smile is inspired by the anime and manga series Baki the Grappler and is meant to resemble the character Yujiro Hanma's smile. In April 2023, the smile became the subject of a TikTok trend where users do the smile, often under the caption, "how to shush a toddler."
Origin
In the anime and manga series Baki the Grappler, the character Yujiro Hanma has a distinct wide smile that takes up a large portion of his face (shown below).
On January 6th, 2022, TikToker[1] @angelec99 posted a video captioned "smiles in Baki be like" where he uses his finger to push up his upper lip and push down his lower lip, then smiles, trying to replicate Hanma's smile (shown below). The video gained over 64,000 views and is the earliest known video to use the method.
