Battle Of Mid is a slang expression derived from the term "mid," which is used to humorously compare people or specific content labeled as mediocre or boring in quality. The term and parody battle was popularized in various memes on X (Twitter), Instagram and TikTok around mid-June 2022, spreading over the following years.

Origin

Although the exact origin of the "Battle of Mid" meme is unknown, one of the earliest mentions dates back to May 29th, 2022, and was posted by X[1] user @KidKoyns as an ironic response towards the announcement of a Call Of Duty championship match. The post (shown below) used an edited Google search screenshot of the "Battle of Midway," which refers to a historical event in June 1942 from WW2 when the U.S. and Japanese naval forces engaged in a five-day battle in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Around September 2022, the edited image of the "Battle of Mid" became a prominent reaction image on X, typically used to mock two instances of events, characters or celebrities that are considered by the user to be mediocre or boring. For instance, on September 6th, 2022, X[2] meme archive page @reactjpg posted the image (shown below, left) paired with the caption "battle of mid wikipedia a battle over two extremely mid entities of forms of media," which amassed nearly 500 likes and 64 retweets in a year.

On July 2nd, 2023, X[3] user @RocketPMohawk posted the meme to label two Formula 1 racers as mid (shown below, right), which garnered over 5,500 likes and 300 retweets three months.

They Having a Mid Off is a catchphrase that uses the slang term "mid" and imagines a competition between two subjects over who is the most mid. For example, on October 17th, 2022, X[4] user @gemmygemg tweeted a YouTube thumbnail showing all of the Try Guys paired with, "They having a mid off." It earned roughly 63,900 likes in five months (shown below).
