BioShock Infinite 3D Porn Breakthroughs refers to a series of memes referencing supposed developments in the field of pornographic 3D animation following the release of the 2013 video game BioShock Infinite due to the popularity of its character Elizabeth. The developments in 3D animation, particularly in rigging, achieved at that time eventually led to the proliferation of 3D pornography following the release of Overwatch in 2016, and have been referenced in memes since 2022.

Origin

On March 26th, 2013, the first-person shooter video game BioShock Infinite was released. The game introduced the character Elizabeth, a young female who accompanies the protagonist Booker DeWitt for the majority of the game and is revealed to be his daughter at the end. The character also appears in the two-part DLC BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea and is a playable character in the second part of it.

In the months following the release of the game, Elizabeth achieved virality as a subject of pornographic and Rule 34 animations developed by 3D artists such as Fugtrup, Ellowas, amatori and others. On Reddit, the subreddit /r/BioshockPorn^[1] was created for the purpose of collecting pornographic content featuring BioShock characters, primarily Elizabeth.

On October 8th, 2013, BioShock Infinite designer Ken Levine took part in a Reddit^[2] AMA in which he asked "whoever is doing the Elizabeth porn on DeviantArt" to stop. On October 11th, 2013, Kotaku^[3][4] wrote about Levine's request, with a February 2014 article reporting that the plea did not work (snippets shown below, left and right).

On December 12th, 2019, X^[5] user @_watsu made a post in which he wrote about "one guy falling in love with BioShock's Infinite's Elizabeth" leading to them to develop better tools and rig superior models for Source Filmmaker, a popular tool used for creating animated sex scenes, which subsequently led to a boom of 3D pornography.

While concrete supporting information supporting this claim is not readily available online, in May 2013 3D porn animator Ellowas reported^[6] developing new rigs to hone his craft.

Spread

On May 29th, 2022, X^[7] user @Bolverk15 made a similar post in which they argued that BioShock Infinite's only lasting legacy was "porn of its main character being responsible for several breakthroughs in 3d animation." The post (shown below) garnered over 2,500 reposts and 18,000 likes in two years and was widely circulated online with reposts on Tumblr and Reddit.^[8]

The circulation of the post spread the notion that BioShock Infinite, alongside the 2013 video game Tomb Raider, had a major impact on 3D pornography, which eventually resulted in a major influx of it following the release of Overwatch in 2016.

For example, on March 24th, 2023, Redditor Gingersnap5322 posted a Jesse, What Are You Talking About? meme that received over 1,800 upvotes in /r/dankmemes^[9] in one year (shown below, left). On August 1st, Redditor Rose275 posted a People Who Know meme that garnered over 25,000 upvotes in /r/dankmemes^[10] in 10 months (shown below, right).
