About
Bites Za Dusto is a catchphrase and reference used in memes from the anime JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, specifically in part four titled Diamond is Unbreakable. The name of the attack, said by the character Yoshikage Kira, became a memetic phrase used in various images, remixes and other formats since its episode debuted in late 2016.
Origin
On November 25th, 2016, episode 35 of Diamond is Unbreakable aired, which showed the anime adaptation of the attack originally from the manga series. The attack itself is fully named "Killer Queen, Third Bomb, Bites The Dust," but due to the way the voice actor pronounces the English song title, it comes across as "Bites Za Dusto," which was the associated name of the meme until the English dub came out. The day the episode was released, the YouTube account cha_the_tea[1] uploaded a video in which the Queen song "Another One Bites The Dust" was mixed with the audio from the show when Bites Za Dusto activates, earning over 2 million views in six years (shown below).
Spread
In anticipation of the episode's release on November 25th, 2016, memes about "Bites The Dust" and "Bites Za Dusto" were already being made and shared online leading up to the premiere. For example, on October 11th, 2016, a month before the episode's release, an anonymous Imgur[2] user uploaded a Cyanide and Happiness GIF meme in which one character is showing the other their Stand, Killer Queen, and its "Bites The Dust" ability (shown below).
References to Bites Za Dusto continued spreading online over the following years in a multitude of memes. On April 15th, 2017, Pinterest user Rocklan Xanimus[3] pinned a Principal Skinner's Pathetic meme that was edited to be about Yoshikage Kira activating Bites The Dust as a reference to the show (shown below).
