About

Bobo the Bear is the patron saint of bearish markets. The design of Bobo is based on Apu Apustaja and sometimes Pepe the Frog created in the style of a bear. This variant is commonly posted on 4chan's /biz/ board, along with Mumu as the two sides of the trading market.

Origin

Although the bear existed as a meme before the name was attached to it[1], the name itself was decided in a thread posted on the 17th of June 2018[4], Bobo as a name won the competition and was thus declared official. Ever since then, the archives record over 40k[5] uses of the word, most having to do with the aforementioned character or his influence over a situation.

Spread

Bobo is posted sitewide on 4chan, but most notably on the /biz/ Business & Finance Board[2]. Many users post Bobo alongside Apustaja and Pepe memes on the /biz/ board, satirizing poor investment choices and signaling pessimism in a financial market's state of affairs. Bobo NFTs have also been made[3].
