Bota 😔 refers to a slang term and image macro based on an image combining a sad face emoji looking backward and his butt appearing with the Portuguese overlay text "bota." The literal translation for the slang term "bota" is "put it in." Bota 😔 became popular on June 2019 in Brazil, inspiring WhatsApp stickers, and was also used as a reaction image on Twitter.
Origin
The earliest available post featuring the "bota" meme was uploaded on June 21st, 2019, by Twitter[1] user @ppeuma. He decided to create several variations of the meme (seen below), featuring other overlayed texts in Portuguese, like "- bota com força" and "bota purfavô." The post garnered 18,000 likes and 4,338 retweets in four years.
The website Dicionário Popular,[2] similar to Urban Dictionary, explained in an article that the "Bota" meme (seen below) can be used as a form of sex appeal, as the image itself implies. "Bota" can also be represented through the emojis of the sad face along with the peach (🍑😔).
Spread
Starting on June 21st, 2019, the image macro gained popularity on Twitter, with multiple users posting reaction memes based on it. For example, on that day, Twitter[3] user @gabesiwoes posted a meme that received over 555 likes and 39 retweets in four years (shown below, left). A meme posted by Twitter[4] user @brunomscoelhoon on June 26th shows several variations of the meme available, gaining over 141 likes and 17 retweets (shown below, right).
On June 25th, 2019, Twitter[5] user @perrart posted a map of Italy in the "bota" format, as the word can also be translated to boot, the shape of the European country. The post (seen below) garnered 69,200 likes and 24,100 retweets in four years.
