The memes often depict BF and GF lore as disturbing or shocking and rare. Videos about learning BF and GF lore became increasingly popularized on TikTok throughout 2023.

It is unclear when the terms "boyfriend lore" and "girlfriend lore" were officially coined. Boyfriend lore appears to have started earlier, with one of the earliest known uses of the term being posted in a video description by TikToker^[1] @virginweezerfan on January 17th, 2022, writing, "Boyfriend lore :,)" garnering over 130,000 views in just under two years (shown below).

The term "boyfriend lore" became increasingly popular throughout 2023 in videos about learning boyfriend lore. For example, on April 30th, 2023, TikToker^[2] @eryn_not.erin posted a video where her boyfriend shares some lore, garnering over 90,000 views in eight months (shown below, left). On November 8th, TikToker^[3] @noconfidence543 posted a video about how shocking it can be to learn BF lore, garnering over 1.7 million views in a month (shown below, right).

The term "girlfriend lore" became increasingly popular that month alongside boyfriend lore. For example, on November 20th, TikToker^[4] @humordarius posted a video captioned "Girlfriend lore go crazy" about learning girlfriend lore that gained over 66,000 views in two weeks (shown below).

On November 30th, TikToker^[5] @luvrsarai posted a video about listening intently when her boyfriend decides to dump BF lore on her, garnering over 3.7 million views in a week (shown below, left).
