About
Bread π, also known as Bread *Thumbs Up*, refers to a viral TikTok video, Duet chain and spam comment trend started from a TikTok posted in early 2021. The video and screen recordings of the entire Duet thread received attention across platforms going into 2021, however, "Bread π" as a comment section spam was popularized most notably on Reddit in September 2021.
Origin
On March 15th, 2021, TikToker[1] @emergencybread uploaded a video where he cuts a piece of dough with a blade, causing it to split down the middle. He ends the video by saying "bread" and giving a thumbs up. The video (shown below, left) received roughly 6.6 million plays and 1 million likes over the course of eight months. Two days later, on March 17th, 2021, TikToker @bigboy76_ posted a Duet with the video saying "bread" at the same time and giving a thumbs up. @bigboy76_'s TikTok has since been deleted, but it can be viewed in the next TikTok that added to the trend, posted by TikToker[2] @depresstonnn on March 18th, 2021. His TikTok (shown below, right) received roughly 2.4 million plays and 369,800 likes over the course of eight months.

Spread
Going into the rest of March 2021, TikTokers[3] continued to add onto the Duets, each saying "bread" and giving a thumbs up. A video editing together all of the TikToks was posted to YouTube [4] by account MemeGuyAJ on March 29th, 2021. The video (shown below) received roughly 218,100 views and 10,000 likes over the course of seven months.
"Bread π" became a copypasta starting most notably in TikTok comments of the original Duets (shown below, left). However, the use of "bread π" as comment section spam was popularized further on Reddit in September 2021. This came about when Redditor[5] nasdarovije posted a screenshot of a chat section in Roblox's offshoot hangout game "Public Bathroom Simulator" to the subreddit /r/GoCommitDie on September 5th, 2021. The image (shown below, right) received roughly 3,700 likes over the course of two months.
Redditors began to spam "bread π" in the comment section of nasdarovije's post. Screenshots of the spam comments were reposted to other subreddits like /r/shitposting[6] and /r/YuB.[7] A post to /r/YuB was uploaded by Redditor[7] PeacefulSoySauce on September 5th, 2021, and received roughly 1,200 likes over the course of two months (shown below).
More "Bread π" related memes began appearing across Reddit going into the rest of September 2021 and into October. In subreddits like /r/EmKay[8] and /r/Wilbur,[9] more and more "Bread π" memes and comment section screenshots were posted. Additionally, memes[10] began to appear in late October 2021 relating the "Bread π" trend to other comment section spam trends like I Forgor π and the Moyai Emoji, among others.
