Brides Throwing Cats is a single topic Tumblr blog featuring photoshopped pictures of brides throwing cats that have been superimposed over flower bouquets.

Origin

On October 5th, 2013, the "Brides Throwing Cats" blog was launched on Tumblr,^[2] with the first post featuring a photo of a woman throwing a cat into a group of women behind her (shown below).

Precursor

The idea of swapping easily recognizable objects with cats has been explored since as early as in July 2009, when Ryan Darrenkamp created the single topic Tumblr blog Boozecats to showcase party photos wherein miniature cats rare superimposed over alcoholic beverages (shown below, left). In April 2013, the Tumblr blog “Sports Balls Replaced With Cats":https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/sports-balls-replaced-with-cats was launched with photographs in which sports balls are replaced with cats (shown below, right).

Spread

On October 9th, photographs from the blog were highlighted on the Internet news site Laughing Squid^[4] and the women's interest blog Jezebel.^[5] On the following day, notable examples from the series were posted on the viral content site BuzzFeed^[1] and the Internet humor blog Pleated Jeans.^[8] Also on October 10th, the Time Magazine Newsfeed^[3] blog and The Daily Dot^[7] published articles about the photoshop meme, followed by the tech news blog Mashable^[6] the following day.
