Bronn is a fictional character from the fantasy TV show Game of Thrones (played by Jerome Flynn) and is known for his skill as a sellsword as well as his witty humor. In memes, he is often used alongside references to his on-screen humor, such as his quote “I'd fuck her,” but also appears in a number of photoshopped edits referred to as “Bronnposting,” particularly on 9GAG in 2020.

Origin

Bronn first appeared in the HBO show Game of Thrones during season one, episode four titled, "Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things" which premiered on May 8th, 2011. In the episode (shown below), Tyrion Lannister hires Bronn as a sellsword to protect him while traveling on the road.

In memes, Bronn’s exact first appearance is unknown, but Bronn’s quote from the show, “I'd fuck her,” was used as an image macro as early as January 24th, 2017, by an anoymous 4chan^[1] user (seen below), which later solidified into a meme format.

Bronn and his likeness have been used in numerous memes over the years in a wide array of formats. One of the oldest uses comes in the form of image macros and reaction images featuring his quote “I'd fuck her.” One such example was posted on October 19th, 2018, by a 9GAG^[2] user featuring an image of Bronn with the caption "OIDA," meaning "dude" in German. The post (shown below, left) received more than 2,900 points in less than four months. On August 25th, 2019, Redditor^[3] Grjean8 posted an image of Bronn under the title “So everyone is submitting joke characters, so here is mine: Ser Bronn of the Blackwater, Master of Coin,” receiving over 26,400 upvotes and 467 comments in roughly one year (shown below, right).

Bronnposting

On 9GAG, Bronn’s likeness appears in a number of photoshopped edits where the character’s face is swapped into various scenes and clips from other movies or shows, referred to as “Bronnposting,” especially when the post includes an attractive woman. One such example was posted by 9GAG^[4] user umtoge on September 21st, 2020, in the comments section of a post (seen below, left), receiving over 5,600 points in roughly 24 hours. On September 5th, another 9GAG^[5] user posted an image of Bronn edited onto a marble statue (seen below, right), receiving over 5,400 points in 17 days.

On June 5th, 2020, another 9GAG^[6] user posted an image referencing “Bronn Hub” to the Game of Thrones section (seen below, left), accumulating over 6,600 points and 300 comments in roughly three months. On August 15th, Bronn appeared in another photoshopped meme posted by a 9GAG^[7] user to the Funny section (seen below, right), accumulating over 6,400 points and 245 comments in roughly one month.
