Cassette Girl is an original character designed by Newgrounds artist SoftDon in 2018. Her popularity on the website, especially after being teased as a Friday Night Funkin' playable character, led to the creation of many fanarts, and to her status as one of Newgrounds' unofficial mascots.

Online History

SoftDon (also known as DONDORORORO) uploaded his drawing of Cassette Girl (see below) on his now-deactivated Newgrounds account on August 5th, 2018. He got the inspiration for her by listening to a song, which led him to think of a mascot he could use if he ever created music^[1]. She is a cyborg, and takes the form of a young woman with white skin, long, straight black hair, and a cap-shaped cassette player at the top of her head. She wears a hoodie and is depicted smoking a cigarette, a trait that has become recurrent in her further representations.

Cassette Girl met a moderate popularity on the website for the first two years of her existence, as testified by the fan-made art of her in that period (see examples below).

On November 15th, 2020, she was part of 4 Newgrounds-born characters who were teased to become playable characters in a mod of the rythm-based video game Friday Night Funkin'. This exposure increased her popularity for the years to come, as shown by the amount of fan art she inspired since then.

SoftDon was the center of several controversies during the year 2023. One of them was an accusation of sexual violence from an ex-girlfriend, who also claimed that Cassette Girl's design was based on her. Eventually, on August 25th, 2023, as a consequence to this controversy, it was officially decided that Cassette Girl would be removed from Friday Night Funkin'^[2]. Her popularity has also become significantly weaker as a consequence, even after new evidence put the accusation into doubt.
