Chonky Toad Dancing refers to a video of a mascot dressed as the Super Mario Bros. character Toad dancing at Super Nintendo World Japan. The video has been used as an exploitable and remixed numerous times to feature various music, primarily in early 2021.

Origin

On February 3rd, 2021, Universal Parks News Today uploaded a video to YouTube[1] taken at Universal Studios Japan's Super Nintendo World, showcasing the various costumed characters that wander the park. At the 3:54 mark in the video, a person dressed as Toad is shown waving and dancing (shown below).

On the night of February 3rd, Twitter[2] user @NintendoFanGirl tweeted, "I CANNOT get over dancing Toad" along with a clip from Universal Parks News Today's video of Toad dancing, garnering over 2,600 likes and 500 retweets in two weeks. On the same day, she uploaded a version of the video to TikTok[3] in which Toad dances to "Better Off Alone," garnering over 47,000 views in the same span of time (shown below).

On February 3rd, 2021, Twitter[4] user @OnTheDownLoTho tweeted @NintendoFanGirl's clip along with the text, "THE CHONKY TOAD DANCES" garnering over 5,300 likes, 1,200 retweets and 100 comments in two weeks. This inspired a number of Twitter users to edit music into the clip and reupload it as a comment to @OnTheDownLoTho's tweet starting that day (earliest example from February 3rd shown below).[5]

Over the next two weeks, Twitter users edited the clip to feature various songs and re-uploaded them to Twitter, some garnering significant attention.[7][8]

On February 13th, @ChonkyToad, an account dedicated to videos of Chonky Toad Dancing, uploaded a clip to Twitter[6] set to the Kingdom Hearts 2.8 opening, garnering over 1,100 likes in three days (shown below).

On February 14th, the same account uploaded a clip of Toad dancing set to the Persona 4: Dancing All Night theme to Twitter,[9] garnering over 6,700 likes and 1,500 retweets in two days (shown below).
