About

Chris Crying refers to an image macro from the 2017 film Get Out when the character Chris Washington (played by Daniel Kaluuya) is crying as the camera zooms into him. It was first used as a reaction image on Instagram in 2017. In 2022, it was used en masse as the bottom panel in two-panel memes as a reaction to another movie or TV show character saying a line with similarity to the film's title.

Origin

On February 24th, 2017, The film Get Out was released in the U.S. [1] In the film, Chris Washington is hypnotized by his girlfriend's mother (played by Catherine Keener). Chris suddenly starts crying while she is circling a spoon around a tea cup's rim. On July 28th, 2017, YouTube[2] channel Movieclips uploaded the scene. The video received more than 2 million views in five years (shown below).

Before the movie was released in February 2017, the movie's trailer included the scene of Chris Crying out-of-context. On January 24th, 2017, the Instagram[6] page sloppytoppy (since-deleted) captioned the screenshot, "When she doing that suck and two hand twist combo" (shown below), earning an unknown amount of likes but being reposted to multiple websites.[7]

Spread

Despite its usage in 2017, the meme wasn't used en masse until 2022. On July 22nd, 2022, the Facebook[3] page Certified Kino Bot – Cinephile Rebuild uploaded a meme that used a screencap from Drive (2011) and Chris Crying as a reaction to when Ryan Gosling's character says "I Drive." The post received roughly 1,400 reactions and over 600 shares in one month (shown below, left). On August 8th, 2022, Facebook[4] user Yae Simp uploaded a similar meme but referenced the game Honkai Impact 3. The post received roughly 1,000 reactions and over 100 shares in three weeks (shown below, right).

On August 19th, 2022, Twitter[5] user @playsciadvnow captioned the Chris Crying image with, "visual novels fans when the VN becomes dark and tragic after 20 hours of slice of life." The tweet received roughly 5,700 likes and over 860 retweets in ten days (shown below).
