About

Class Clown At Home, also known as Sad Class Clown or the Funny Kid Coming Home, refers to a meme trend based around the cliché regarding the class clown at school being sad or depressed once they get home. It's usually referenced along with images of a person or pop culture character being exhausted or depressed after making everyone laugh at school all day. The meme started on Twitter and spread to Reddit in mid-2019.

Origin

On June 24th, 2019, Twitter[1] user LiyonKyut posted a tweet that captioned an image of Plankton from SpongeBob SquarePants sadly walking back to the Chum Bucket with, "The funny kid from school, coming home," earning two likes in three years. The tweet was remade into an image macro, posted to Reddit's /r/BikiniBottomTwitter[2] on June 27th by Redditor acrylicrainbow who earned roughly 8,500 likes in three years (shown below).



Spread

On October 4th, 2019, Instagram[3] page pablopiqasso posted a meme using DJ Luigi (shown below, left). The post has since been deleted. On January 10th, 2020, Redditor BROKEN_YUNG_JOE posted a Starter Pack meme to /r/StarterPacks,[4] earning roughly 82,300 upvotes in two years (shown below, right).

More sad class clown memes appeared across social media going into the early 2020s. For instance, on February 14th, 2020, a since-deleted Redditor posted a meme to /r/dankmemes[5] that referenced the class clown on Valentine's Day, earning roughly 26,500 upvotes in two years (shown below, left). On March 11th, 2020, Redditor Prosty53 posted a meme to /r/dankmemes[6] that labeled Joji as the class clown at home, comparing him to, "The quiet kid at home," who states he is going to, "commit war crimes in Albania." The meme (shown below, right) earned roughly 89,900 upvotes in two years.
