About
DJ Luigi refers to a popular scene from the American animated television series The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. In the episode, the video game character Luigi performs on a DJ turntable set, which has inspired a series of video remixes and image macros.
Origin
On October 26th, 1989, the episode "Bad Rap" of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show aired in the United States. The rap music-themed episode includes a moment where Luigi and his brother Mario perform music with Luigi using a pair of turntables (clip below).[1]
The earliest known usage of DJ Luigi as an image macro was posted on by TG Chan[2] user on July 15th, 2010. In this case, the image of Luigi is shown with a caption that mocks the lyrics to the NWA song "Straight Outta Compton" (shown below).

Over the next three years, the image was shared throughout 4chan. [3]
On October 3rd, 2016, YouTuber Slingshot Feather posted a video remix of the scene from Super Show, replacing the soundtrack from the episode with a different song (shown below, left). The post received more than 100,000 views in three years (shown below, left).
Following the post, others remixed the video, adding different songs (example below, right).
The following year, Twitter [4] user @FizzySodaWave tweeted a two-panel image of DJ Luigi and a deep-fried version of the character. The post received 4,500 retweets and 6,400 likes in two years (shown below).
On March 18th, 2019, Redditor [5]Bilbo-Baggins-Jr posted a two-panel image macro featuring the DJ Luigi image that references the Last Online 5 Years Ago meme. The post received more than 65,000 points (90% upvoted) and 1,100 comments in two days (shown below).
