Crocs Stay On During Sex refers to a snowclone based on a popular tweet about the strap of the Crocs being there to prevent them from coming off during sex. Starting in July 2019, a series of memes stating that various unusual items of clothing will be staying on during intercourse gained popularity on Reddit.

Origin

On May 21st, 2017, Twitter user @sug_knight tweeted "The strap on the back of Crocs is so they stay on during sex."^[1] The tweet gained over 6,950 retweets and 23,200 likes in two years.

Spread

Starting in January 2018, multiple Twitter users posted variations of the joke (examples shown below).^[2][3]

On May 14th, 2019, Tumblr user mudgremlin posted "Sorry babe, during sex, the plague mask stays ON," with the post gaining over 21,750 notes and being other social networks in the following days (shown below, left).^[4] On May 16th, 2019, Twitter user @milkygoddess posted a rephrased @sug_knight's joke (shown below, right),^[5] with the tweet gaining over 6,700 retweets and 25,000 likes in three months and spawning a snowclone series on the platform.

On July 15th, 2019, Redditor Sonofdmh made a meme captioned "Sorry babe, the Derp Song stays on during sex", which gained over 14,800 upvotes in /r/okbuddyretard subreddit in one month (shown below).^[6]

In the following month, the memes based on the snowclone gained significant popularity in the subreddit, also spreading to other Reddit communties^[7] and Instagram^[8] in August 2019.
