The original upload date of the stock photograph is unknown. However, Getty Images^[1] credits the series to "Atrendo Images" and is part of a series featuring the same man (shown below).

The earliest available usage of the image as a meme was published by an anonymous 4chan ^[2] user on January 17th, 2016. They wrote, "Why do nerds like you feel need to come out about what fandom you're in? For gods sake, you're not gay, you just like animal people. I get most people just automatically assume it's a sex thing because of the news and angry soccer moms but come on dude."

Spread

That year, the image moved to Twitter, where users posted the photographs as a reaction image. On March 1st, 2016, Twitter^[3] user @5uave__ posted the image with the caption "When you've won the argument already but you're petty & you think of another point." The post received more than 375 likes and 345 retweets in less than five years (shown below, left).

That year, the Facebook ^[4] group StudentProblems posted the images as the reaction to the caption "When deadlines are killing you but you haven't got time to die as you have too much work to do." The post received more than 49,000 reactions, 39,000 shares and 16,00 comments in less than four years (shown below, center).

Years, later, on March 27th, 2020, Redditor ^[5] ImACumWhore shared the image with the caption "When you were dead, but someone commented that you died because you were vegan." The post received more than 24,000 points (92% upvoted) and 300 comments in less than one week (shown below, right).
