Guy Sipping Beer on a Couch Stock Image or Couch Potato Sipping Bear refers to a stock photograph of a man sitting on a couch with a plate of potato chips in his lap, drinking beer from a bottle while clicking the TV remote with his other hand extended toward the television. The stock photo, used in various articles since the early 2010s, gained virality as a reaction image and a redraw meme format in late 2024.

Origin

On February 20th, 2011, Shutterstock^[1] user Nomad_soul uploaded a stock photograph of a man dressed in a striped T-shirt sitting on a couch with a plate of chips in his lap, drinking beer from a bottle while pointing a TV remote with his other hand (photograph shown below). On February 26th, Nomad_soul uploaded^[2] a similar stock photograph from the same photoshoot.

Spread

Through 2010s and 2020s, the photograph was used in various blog posts and articles.^[3][4]

On December 25th, 2024, X^[5] user @Melodic_Lemons3 made the earliest found viral post that used the photograph as a reaction image, captioning it, "Me for the past four months because the job market been terrible." The post (shown below) garnered over 11,000 reposts and 163,000 likes in one week.

On December 29th, 2024, X^[6] user @art_retr0 posted the image with the caption, "Draw your OC/fave like this," inviting artists to share redraws of it. In the following days, multiple users on X posted redraws of the image.

For example, on December 30th, X^[7] user @nurtleteckye posted a fan art of Hylics character Wayne based on the stock photograph that received over 2,500 reposts and 19,000 likes in one day (shown below).
