About

Dog Looking At Door Parodies or Dog Staring Into Black Doorway refers to parodies and exploitable memes about Deimos, a 2015 painting by Serbian artist Dragan Bibin that shows a terrier-like dog looking into a dark doorway. The painting was reposted to X / Twitter in late August 2024, with internet users jokingly editing and photoshopping meme figures into the door to joke about what would make the painting "scarier."

Origin

Serbian artist Dragan Bibin painted an image of a dog staring into a darkened doorway as part of his Deimos series in 2015. The artist describes the oil-on-canvas painting series as being named after the god of terror in ancient Greece. Bibin distinguishes between terror and horror, drawing on Ann Radcliffe's description of terror as characterized by "obscurity" or indeterminacy to create paintings where "eerie interiors, doors open on black nothingness and expectant animals are all playing with our fears and our nightmares."[1]

The painting has been reposted online in the years since 2015, including on January 21st, 2020, when a post to /r/oddlyterrifying gathered over 19,000 likes in four years.[2]

On August 26th, 2024, X[3] user @ConRayArt posted an image of Dragan Bibin's painting as part of "a small thread of artworks and artists that 'retain an essential mystery.'" The post gathered over 130,000 likes in a day.

The thread received a joke response from X[4] user @no_sophist shortly after, who added a pair of glowing red eyes to the doorway, writing, "I think this is much better." The image was reposted by X user @ConRayArt that day with the caption "…," setting off a meme trend in which people edit the photo themselves.
