DSL (Slang)

DSL is a slang acronym for Dick Sucking Lips, usually referring to a woman who has larger-than-average-sized lips, though it can also be used to describe a pair of lips someone finds attractive. The term has long circulated on social media and the internet since at least the mid-2000s. In late 2022 and early 2023, DSL saw a resurgence on TikTok after several users made posts saying they'd just learned what it meant.

Origin

DSL has long been understood as an acronym to mean "dick sucking lips," and on March 23rd, 2005, was first added to Urban Dictionary by user Tray,^[1] accumulating nearly 8,000 likes in 18 years (shown below).

Spread

For much of the 2000s and 2010s, the term appeared widely enough online that it was defined by multiple publications, including Slang.com,^[2] NetLingo^[3] and Acronym.io.^[4]

DSL was frequently used on various platforms during the 2010s to describe attractive women. For example, on May 13th, 2010, Redditor Texacer posted a picture of Angelina Jolie to /r/pics,^[6] titling the post "DSL" (shown below, left). On June 23rd, 2013, a deleted Redditor posted a picture of a woman's lips to /r/randomsexiness,^[7] describing them as the "definition of DSL" (shown below, right).

On May 13th, 2015, Khloe Kardashian^[5] notably joked about having "DSL" in an Instagram video, which garnerd over 294,000 likes in roughly eight years (seen below).

TikTok Resurgence

In the early 2020s, TikTokers began using DSL to discuss their own lips, leading to some confusion in comments about what "DSL" meant.

On December 23rd, 2021, TikToker @viluong^[8] posted about a girl saying she had "DSL" when she was 14, gaining over 8,000 likes in 18 months (shown below, left). The top comment on the post comes from a user asking "What's DSL?" On February 5th, 2023, TikToker gimmeyogf posted that they had just discovered what the term meant after seeing it a lot in her comments, gaining over 10,000 likes in four months (shown below, right).
