About

Elastic Morty, also known as Elastic Man or Stretchy Morty, refers to an online web game on the Adult Swim website where the player can stretch and distort a 3D rendering of Morty's face from the TV series Rick and Morty in exaggerated ways. The game was uploaded online in 2017 and has inspired memes on YouTube, becoming popularized throughout the early 2020s.

Origin

On November 23rd, 2017, an interactive web toy or game called "Elastic Man" was uploaded to the Adult Swim[1] website. The game allows users to stretch a 3D rendered face of Morty from Rick and Morty in extreme ways, coupled with squelching sound effects. The toy was created by David Li, with the audio credited to Dolphin Club Audio (gameplay shown below).



Spread

Elastic Morty has been used in several memes on YouTube since its release. For example, on April 7th, 2020, YouTuber[2] A Wild Gamer posted a meme where he makes stretchy Morty sing the Halo theme song, gaining over 1.1 million views in roughly two years (shown below).



On February 12th, 2021, YouTuber Kindly Keyin posted a video where he plays the "weirdest" games on the web, playing the game at the 9:29 mark, gaining over 5.8 million views in a year (shown below, left). On April 30th, YouTuber Norme posted a meme where it looks like stretchy Morty is drinking from a can of Coke, gaining over 9.3 million views in 10 months (shown below, right).



On May 8th, YouTuber Paul Wil slap u posted a Friday Night Funkin' edit where stretchy Morty faces off against Boyfriend, gaining over 308,000 views in nine months (shown below, left). On May 19th, the same YouTuber made an Eats a Lemon and Dies edit using the character, gaining over 3 million views in the same span of time (shown below, right).
