The image started circulating online, primarily on X / Twitter, that day, where it became a go-to photo used by conservatives to criticize Emhoff's looks, while also inspiring memes in which it is used to express shock over a subject.

On August 20th, 2024, X^[1] user @RichardHanania posted a screenshot of Ella Emhoff, Kamala Harris's step-daughter, striking a shocked-looking reaction at the 2024 DNC, writing, "Ella Emhoff being a part of the first family has the potential to radicalize American parents. I’m for women living the lives they want, but this is pretty much the nightmare scenario for most people with a daughter," garnering over 5,000 likes in two days (shown below).

The poster later elaborated on the reasoning behind his caption when confronted by a commenter, writing, "Tattoos on women are generally disgusting."

Spread

The image gained viral spread over the following days as the subject of memes and further criticism of Emhoff from some users.

For example, on August 20th, 2024, X^[2] user @verymoisturized posted the photo next to one of Ivanka Trump, writing, "If your children can’t look dignified in public, how can you be expected to effectively lead your constituents. It’s disorder all the way down," garnering over 5,000 likes in two days.

That same day, X^[3] user @heshiebee posted the image under the caption, "the Starbucks barista when I hit ‘no tip,'" garnering around five likes in two days. A similar meme was posted by X^[4] user @CramerTracker about half an hour later, writing, "The barista when I select no tip on a $9 coffee," garnering over 39,000 likes in two days (shown below). On August 21st, it was reposted by Instagram^[5] user fakenewsnetwork, garnering over 30,000 likes in a day.

Later on August 21st, 2024, the Facebook^[6] page Sebastian the Sabbatical Frog posted a very similar meme captioned "the non-binary barista when I select 'no tip' on my $12 latte," garnering over 800 reactions and 60 shares in a day (shown below).
