About
Ella Emhoff is an influencer, artist and model, as well as the stepdaughter of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. Emhoff went viral originally in January 2021 at the 46th U.S. Presidential Inauguration of Joe Biden for her interesting outfit alluding to the most hipster aspects of current Zoomer culture. She has been made into memes online mostly for her perceived wealth and privilege, Brooklynite lifestyle and Depop-esque fashion choices, which are often perceived as cringeworthy by some users online.
Online History
On January 20th, 2021, Ella Emhoff appeared at the 46th U.S. Presidential Inauguration of Joe Biden alongside her father Douglas Emhoff and her stepmother U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. Emhoff received lots of attention for the outfit she wore that day (shown below, left), which The Cut described in an article[1] they published on January 20th, 2021, as an "androgynous, eclectic style." During the event, Emhoff trended across Twitter. For example, user @benkesslen referred to Emhoff as the "first daughter of bushwick" in a tweet[2] (shown below, right) posted on January 20th, 2021, which received roughly 5,900 likes over the course of 10 months.
Many Twitter users began to "stan" Emhoff, thinking she was "serving" at the inauguration, like Twitter user @sincerelyyols whose tweet[3] (shown below, left) posted on January 20th, 2021, received roughly 3,200 likes over the course of 10 months. However, many Twitter users also had the opposite reaction. Many began to make fun of Emhoff, or more so, make fun of the reaction of people to stan her. For instance, "Cum Town" podcast member Stavros Halkias sent a tweet[4] (shown below, right) on January 20th, 2021, which received 708 likes that said, "just go to bushwick and look for a girl…"
Signing To IMG Models
According to BBC News,[5] in the week following the inauguration, Emhoff's Instagram following jumped from 50,000 to over 300,000. The controversy behind her popularity and the virality surrounding her got the attention of modeling agencies looking to sign her. On January 28th, 2021, modeling agency IMG Models announced on Twitter that Emhoff would be joining them. The tweet[6] (shown below) received roughly 5,600 likes over the course of 10 months.
In subsequent replies and quote tweets to the IMG tweet, Twitter users began reacting to the news. Most were upset by the announcement. For instance, Twitter user @hotlocal_single tweeted[6] on January 28th, 2021, (shown below) and received roughly 1,100 likes over the course of 10 months.
Related Memes
Once news of her new modeling contract broke on Twitter, meme creators began to surface old outfit pictures from her Instagram. Two photos,[7][8] in particular (shown below), both posted in December 2020, began receiving meme attention on Twitter and Instagram starting in January 2021 for being perceived as cringeworthy.
For example, on January 29th, 2021, Twitter user @okayeverett tweeted a meme[9] (shown below, left) on January 24th, 2021, which received 91 likes over the course of 10 months. On January 29th, 2021, Twitter user @biboofficial sent a tweet using one of the December 2020 outfit pictures. Her tweet[10] (shown below, right) received roughly 9,700 likes over the course of 10 months.
Another outfit picture that Emhoff posted in May 2021 received meme attention for being perceived as strange and cringey. The picture (shown below) was used across Twitter, mostly relating its look to that of The Lorax's "thneed."[11]
Photographs With Boyfriend
In February 2021, Emhoff began dating fellow New York fashion influencer Samuel Hine. The two appeared in multiple pictures together on Instagram[12][13] throughout the rest of 2021. Notably, in September 2021, the two were remixed into memes from an @ellaemhoff Instagram post[13] posted on September 26th, 2021. For instance, on October 3rd, 2021, Twitter account @telepathy_party used the photo of the pair in a tweet[14] (shown below) which received roughly 560 likes over the course of two days.
