Origin

On July 10th, 2024, Nintendo of America posted an age-restricted YouTube^[1] video titled, "Emio." The video, featuring a creepy scene in which a man wearing a trenchcoat with a paper bag on his head flashes on the screen, gathered over 60,000 views in two hours (seen below).

Nintendo's official X^[2] account also made a post about "Emio," with a July 10th tweet reading, "#WhoIsEmio?" (seen below). The post also contained a link to a webpage on its site.^[3]

Spread

As the teaser trailer spread online, some internet users shared theories about what Emio could be, with X^[4] user @Wario64 posting on July 10th, 2024, about how it could be the title Bloober, the team behind Silent Hill 2, was working on for Nintendo (seen below, left). The tweet received over 1.2 million views and 2,000 likes in 24 hours.

Other internet users joked about how Emio should be in Super Smash Bros, such as X^[5] user @KilogramHours in a July 10th post that received over 97,000 views and 3,800 likes in 24 hours (seen below, right).

Also on July 10th, 2024, Redditor^[6] /u/-autoprime- posted a meme about Nintendo's sharp tonal shift with the Emio trailer, gathering over 1,000 upvotes in a day (seen below, left). Nintendo fans began making art about Emio as well, as seen in a July 10th post by X^[7] user @CaptainClaood, gathering over 1,000 likes in a day (seen below, right).
