Related Explainer: Who Is The 'American Woman In Pakistan?' Onijah Robinson, The Black Lady From New York Who Is In Karachi, Explained

Overview

The American Woman in Pakistan, also known as Onijah Robinson or the Black Woman in Pakistan, refers to a 33-year-old Black woman from New York City named Onijah Andrew Robinson who was in Karachi, Pakistan in early 2025. She was there on a 15-day trip to meet 19-year-old Nidal Ahmed Memon who promised to marry her. However, she was turned away at his house when his parents refused the marriage. She then went on an impromptu media tour in the country, notably speaking at a McDonald's and at a shelter where she was wearing a t-shirt with a bicycle on it. The news clips went viral on American social media sites like TikTok and Twitter / X soon after, sparking viral reactions and memes about the woman at her expense. Notable quotes from her include, "What's my plan?" "It's private," "It's against my religion" and "Listen, you talk too much." She also demanded money in one press conference, asking for $100,000 and "$20K this week."

Background

On January 27th, 2025, Pakistani social activist Zafar Abbas posted a video to his Instagram[1] account @zabbas09 about an American woman who was stranded at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, receiving over 3,400 likes in a week. The video was reposted to YouTube[2] by the Times of Karachi on January 28th (shown below).

In the video, Abbas stated that the woman had come to Pakistan to meet a 19-year-old boy who said he'd marry her. She left her two children and divorced her husband in America and flew to Karachi to meet the boy. The boy's family allegedly refused the marriage and would not let the woman into the house. She was lying in the airport for seven days according to Abbas. Also, the Governor of Sindh helped extend the woman's visa and arranged for her a flight back home.

According to reports, the woman was 33-year-old Onijah Andrew Robinson and her lover was 19-year-old Nidal Ahmed Memon. After the Governor extended her visa, Robinson camped outside of Memon's home. She was later taken to the Chhipa charity shelter where she was supposed to remain before her flight home.[3][4]

The shelter held a press conference for her with Ramzan Chhipa, the shelter's owner. He urged the boy to come forward and resolve the situation. Videos of the conference went viral on social media when the TikTok[5] account of We News (@wenewspk) shared a video on January 31st, 2025, that received over 44,200 likes in three days (shown below).
