Overview

Charli D'Amelio Million Follower Loss refers to an ongoing controversy regarding a video featuring TikTok Charli D'Amelio and her family hosting makeup artist James Charles. During the video, D'Amelio made a comment that she hoped to surpass 100 million TikTok followers. Charles responded, sarcastically, "Was the 95 [million] not enough for you?" Both Dixie and Charli D'Amelio comment on the dinner made by celebrity chef Aaron May, a paella that included cooked snails. Dixie claimed to throw up after smelling the snails, and Charli asked if there "dino nuggets" available. The moment became the subject of controversy with fans accusing D'Amelio of being entitled.

On November 16th, 2020, the D'Amelio Family YouTube channel published "Our First Mystery Guest." In the video, the D'Amelio Family host James Charles for a dinner made by celebrity chef Aaron May. During the meal, Dixie D'Amelio, who has said that she has a sensitive stomach, and claimed to throw up after trying one of the snails in the meal. Charli asked if there were "dino nuggets."[1]

At the end of the meal, Charli D'Amelio said that she hoped to surpass 100 million TiKTok followers soon. Charles responded, "Was the 95 [million] not enough for you?"

Online Reaction

Following the release of the video, Charli D'Amelio lost more than one million viewers. On November 19th, 2020, Twitter [2] user @defnoodles tweeted, "UPDATE: Charli D’Amelio nearing losing 1 Million followers in less than 24 hours. She started Wednesday at 99.5M and currently sitting at 98.7M. TikTok appears to be limiting follower info as it’s slightly different than what appears on her page. Also, live updates seeing delays" (shown below).

Charli D'Amelio's Response

On November 19th, 2020, Charli D'Amelio posted a response in a live video (clip below). She apologized for her comments.[5] She said, "Seeing how people reacted to this, like, I don't even know if I want to do this anymore. Like this is messed up stuff that people are saying. Like people telling me to hang myself."

Trisha Paytas Videos

On November 18th, 2020, YouTuber Trisha Paytays published a video duet reacting to the 100 million followers comment. The post received more than 2.4 million reactions, 59,000 comments and 47,000 shares in less than one wee (shown below, left).

That day, Paytas published a video in which she called Dixie D'Amelio "unbecoming" for her reaction to the paella moment. The post received more than 1.3 million views, 51,000 comments and 14,000 shares in less than one week (shown below, right).

Dixie D'Amelio repsonded to the comments saying that her team knows that she has adverse reactions to food. The post received more than 4.7 million reactions and 274,000 comments in less than one week (shown below, left). Paytas responded to this video, as well, receiving more than 451,000 reactions and 36,000 comments in less than one week (shown below, right).

James Charles also published a response to the video, criticizing Paytas for her past controversies. The post received more than 10 million views and 594,000 comments in less than one week (shown below).

Dixie D'Amelio mocked Paytas by performing a dance to audio of Trisha Paytas saying the n-word in "F*ck the Police" by NWA. The video was later deleted, but Twitter user @defnoodles shared the video.

People responded negatively to the video. Twitter[3] user @ItsMalcolmYT tweeted, "As a black person, this… makes her just as bad because she consciously picked that audio because it had the N word… so… yeah." The post recieved more than 22,000 likes and 400 retweets in less than one week (shown below, left).

That day, Dixie tweeted,[4] "i posted a tiktok with the intention of making a point that didn’t need to be made. i took it down and i sincerely apologize for posting it in the first place and am so thankful for everyone. i’m wishing you all a great weekend and thank you again for the love and support." The tweet receivedd more than 69,000 lieks and 1,400 retweets in less than one week (shown below, right).
